I bought it when it was just a little guy, and have been nurturing it for about three years now. It's about 18 inches tall, and was doing great until this winter.
I had my potted plants sitting on the kitchen floor in front of the sliding door for most of the winter (highly visible, so I remember to water, and lots of sun). But DD liked pulling handfuls of dirt out of the pots, DH tired of cleaning dirt off her hands (and occasionally out of her mouth) and of tripping over the pots every time he needed something from the pantry, so the three plants got moved to the front bay window. There, they are easily out of sight, out of mind, because the curtains mostly stay closed during the winter. The two giant avocados have watering globes, the bay did not.
You know what happens next, right? The bay plant severely dried out and all the leaves are wilted and dropping. All of them. Every single one. But the woody stem is still healthy. I watered it and got it a watering globe, but it's been a few weeks and I still haven't seen any new growth. I know bay laurel is a slow grower, so I'm not giving up on it yet, but does anyone have advice? Should I prune it down hard and see what comes back? I loved this plant so much, it really bums me out how we neglected it so badly.
Re: Help with my bay laurel, please
I don't know much (or should I say, anything) about Bay Laurels, but if the woody stem isn't all withered and crispy I would think there's still hope! Is it getting adequate light right now?
Also, how do you feel about those watering globes? I've wanted some for a long time, but I've heard mixed opinions on them.
Thanks for responding! I'm still babying this plant, but it's hard to tell with such a slow grower, you know? I'm still hopeful. It's currently still in the front window, but it's on its way outside now. Last year I completely stressed it out when I just put it outside in May or June and left it, so I'm trying the "out during the day and back in at night" strategy with it this year. Poor thing.
I LOVE the watering globes that I have for my two avocados. They're the As Seen on TV Aqua Globe brand, and they have been life savers for me with having these containerized giants in the dry (forced hot air heat) house all winter. I got a cheap one at Target for the bay, and I don't like it as much. It seems to let water out too fast - the opening is a lot bigger and the stem is a lot shorter than the others.
