We are coming to Lake Tahoe the second week in Dec. We are staying at Marriott's Timber Lodge Resort on the south side of the lake. We have never been to Tahoe. We do not ski but are looking forward to a wintery vacation opposed to all the Carribean vacations we typically take. Should we expect a lot of snow?
What are you thoughts on getting a car rental? Do you think we will need it? THinking about trying sledding with the dogs, snowmobiling and tubing along with just relaxing. Any food recommendations you can provide would be awesome as well.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Coming to Tahoe
Sorry, most of the girls here are from Vegas, not Tahoe. I typically rent a car, but only because I fly into Reno and drive to Tahoe. For food, there are a lot of restaurants we've enjoyed, but I can't remember the names offhand. I know one is in the hotel on the Lake and the other is a brewery. Oh, and if you like sushi, they have the best sushi restaurant there. Just ask your conceierge or front desk, they'll know which one I'm talking about. For other restaurant reviews, check out yelp.com.
You are in a great location, right in the heart of the action. There's plenty to do and see in that area. One thing I like to do is the wine tasting near the Heavenly Base. It's like $15 for 5 wines and another $5-10 for cheese and fruit pairings. We enjoyed just sitting and chatting over wine.
I've never been sledding, but I've heard it's a blast. I've been tubing at Heavenly and Sierra ( I think that's what it's called) and both experiences were just ok for me. The problem with tubing is that it's a slow process. You pay by the hour, but you are limited in the amount of times you can go down the hill based on the number of people waiting. It's usually loaded with kids, especially during the high season/holidays, so I typically average 5 times an hour--not a lot for the cost, IMO.
You will love Tahoe. It's just gorgeous up there.
I live in Tahoe and so far, we have no snow. There is snow in the forecast next week, but it is not expected to be very much. The ski resorts are making snow, so there should be some available for sledding and tubing.
There is a good transit system in town, but I recommend getting a car so that you can travel to other beuatiful spots around the lake: Emerald Bay, Valhalla, Incline Village (where I am) and the west shore.
There are a lot of good restuarants and many of them are located in the area you will be staying. For a low-key dinner I recommend Cecil's.
If you want to relax at a spa, I recommend the spa at Harrah's. It is great!
