Wedding Planning Question... Mary Kay Scam?

I'm getting married in July and I have been getting calls saying that I won things and most of them I've ignored because I'm really skeptical that I've actually gotten anything (I usually think its a scam), but I got a call last week from a local number saying I won a "radiant bride" party from Mary Kay. They said that they were partnered with the knot and I had won a party. Well... I am registered on the knot so I'm not sure if this is a scam or something. The party is tomorrow and I'm really not sure if I should go. I have a my bridal party coming with me so I'm not alone but I don't want to be scammed into something I can't get out of.

Please help!!!

Re: Wedding Planning Question... Mary Kay Scam?

  • I would say it's probably a scam. I got similar calls when I was wedding planning and always ignored them. I even got texts from one lady repeatedly. So annoying! I do remember googling "Mary Kay wedding scam" or something like that and I remember they had tricked other brides into coming to some kind of event where there was like no one else there and other things. Here are two links about it:

  • Thank you! I've been reading and investigating and I'm not going. I hate that I set up an appointment but I'm scared to call and cancel. I've dealt with Mary Kay reps before and I really don't like messing with them.
  • I wouldn't call it a scam. Mary Kay reps are generally just normal people running side businesses out of their homes. It's a little ridiculous that they tell you you've "won" anything, because they'd do the party if you just asked (and actually, they ask their clients to do them) - that's just the way these party-based businesses work. But I wouldn't consider it dangerous or anything.

I went to one I "won" at a bridal show, because I was legitimately looking for products I might like to buy for the wedding. I didn't find anything that day, but at least my face was soft for the next day or so.

This isn't exactly a scam as much as its a sales tactic. They are going to do pressure sales to get you and the others to buy. Mary Kay isn't going to scam you out of your savings or steal you CC # FFS.

I actually just stumbled across this board and normally don't post here...

But my SIL did mary kay for a hot min.

    I agree with this poster.

It's more a sales tactic not so much a scam. They will let you try their product and show you a bunch of stuff in hopes you buy stuff from them. The bigger sell for them is if you or one of your friends actually decide "geez, I could be a mary kay rep!" and they sign you up to be a rep. The package is cheap, like $100 and you get a nice bag and a ton of product but IMO that part is "the scam" that's the pyramid part they really want you to sign up for. You buying product is a bonus.

FWIW, I actually really like their 3 step face wash, day/night solution & moisturizer.

Of course I signed up to help my SIL but what I was told was not what happened. They said, "buy this start up package for $100 and get a ton of stuff" ok, I was going to buy more than than anyway... Then once you're a "consultant" you get 50% off. But it's not really like that. You have to spend over $200 (plus tax and shipping, so like $250) and you get $400 worth of product. Which sorta worked for me because I bought my mom and my aunt their stuff, didn't make a profit but we were all getting our stuff on sale. Yeah, well you have to keep the $200/$400 order every 2 months. They told me you only have to do it once a year then you can order whatever you want as you please...

Anyway. That's the scam part IMO. Their products are ok. Don't be scared to give them your CC number or anything. And don't agree to go to a meeting they are having, it's like walking into a room where everyone just drank the kool-aid

  • At least they aren't making you pay for the sales tactic.

Years ago I had signed up for a make-up class from a list of classes that my local community offers.  I had never heard of Mary Kay before and the two "teachers" started the class by saying how great it was to work for Mary Kay.  I thought that was odd.  The rest of the "class" went went more or less like a Mary Kay makeup "party" I attended months later. They sold a lot of Mary Kay products to the students.  I refused to buy anything.  Looking back I can't believe I had to pay to be advertised to.

  • Ironically enough, one of the reasons I am glad my wedding is now in the past is all the David's Bridal "special offers from our partners" CRAP has finally been cut down tremendously...though not entirely, lol.

Not Mary Kay, but I still remember being BOMBARDED with multiple long text messages from some random company...didn't even say who they were or what they were selling...about winning some bridal package.  I knew it would be some sales pitch but figured, what they heck...I'll go and at least get some free stuff. Until they suddenly popped the info that my FIANCE would need to go with me to collect my gift.  Ummm...yeah.  Not really a "gift" or "winning" is it now? lol.

The hilarious thing is my wedding was never going to be within 2000 miles as the David's Bridal store I went to was located...and David's knew that.  But I got tons of mailers and e-mails from local vendors.  And, even though my wedding was over and done with a month ago, I still get the occasional mailer about my "upcoming wedding".
