We need to buy a new mattress but I've never bought one before . It's a huge purchase and I'm afraid that if we choose the wrong one we'll be stuck with a bad mattress for years to come.
What brands should we limit ourselves to?
How much can I expect to spend on a good mattress?
Do you have to haggle the price at every store?
Re: Mattress Shopping
Attached pillow tops are quite popular.
The biggest issue is that the mattress cannot be flipped over periodically to get equal "wear" on all parts....most major brands do not any longer make the mattresses so they can be flipped. So, you end up with two indentations/"holes" after a few years where you and DH bodies lay while you are sleeping.
Instead of going to a national type of chain store like "Mattress King", look into mattress companies that make their mattresses locally and have a store/showroom in a part of your city...many of these local stores do still make mattresses that can be flipped.
It depends on the size of the mattress, its construction, and its warranty for price. But, for a decent mattress, I would expect to spend at least $1k for a King-sized.
Also, they will probably ask you if you want to buy one of their $90 waterproof mattress protectors. DO IT! And if they don't ask, you should ask for one.
DH and I hesitated on it, but ended up doing it and a week after we got the mattress delivered, our new puppy peed on it! The protector saved the mattress. Also, we've spilled beverages on it and my water broke in my second pregnancy in bed. All times the protector saved us! Well worth every cent of the $90!
Expect to spend about 1K for a King. You want a good mattress because you are going to be sleeping on it for probably the next decade!
I do not like pillowtops solely for the reason the other poster mentioned - you cannot flip them and end up with an indentation. What's the point?
We are due for a new mattress as well and luckily my family has a few guest rooms with new mattresses that I have been able to try. Despite that I don't like the tempur-pedic pillows, I loved the mattress. I could sleep on my side and my shoulder never hurt.
Buy a mattress that has a trial period if you can. Sleep on it a couple weeks and see how you feel. DO haggle for a price. Last time my parents bought a mattress the guy told them never to not try to negotiate. Basically, that means they mark them up expecting the customer to "make a deal".
I agree on getting a cover for the mattress. Not only for the dog peeing, water breaking, glass spilling but because it's just cleaner - especially if you have allergies. You can remove and replace a cover, or wash it, vs. getting a bed dirty. Just make sure you don't get a waterproof one that crinkles. We made that mistake and imagine what it sounds like to sleep on top of a diaper.
We got all 4 of ours at Costco. They are all Sealy Postrpedic and were excellent deals.
Edit: if you buy elsewhere, yes, you have to negotiate. They are notorious for that.
We bought a TempurPedic a year or so ago and love it. we went with a pretty firm version and it was rather pricey 2k+ for a Queen.
We recently bought DD a Queen mattress (long story why a 2 year old has a queen but whatever). We cheaped out and got her a $170 foam mattress from the same place we bought ours. Obviously, hers will need to be replaced before ours but that is fine.
Both have mattress protectors on them.
We didn't haggle on prices.
Because you know you're looking, I would sign up for email deals for local mattress stores and they'll email you deals non-stop (and you can unsubscribe once you've purchased).
My husband & I just purchased a queen mattress on Memorial Day. Our boxspring was still in good condition, so we saved a few bucks by not needing a new one.
Our mattress was on sale for $1400, but my husband said he was only prepared to pay $1000...sure enough, the Sleepys manager found a 'code' that brought the price down to $1005. They were running a promo that included the mattress cover so that was inluded with the price.
We ended up purchasing a Serta iSeries - love it!
