Recommendations for Houston?

Planning a trip to Houston this August.  I would really appreciates any recommendations for hotels, restaurants and things to see and do while we are there.  Thank you.

Are you coming for work, vacation, visit? What part of the city? What are you interested in? Is it you or a family?

It will be hot in August so you might want to consider indoor things or water related activities.

    Things to see and do:

    • The Museum district has several interesting museums.
    • Johnson SpaceCenter (south of town)
    • Galveston Island: Strand and beach, Moody Gardens has a water park, Schlitterbaun water park,
    • Miller Outdoor theater has Spakespeare plays in early August (free/outdoor in the evening)
    • George Ranch (Soutwest of town) is an interesting outside historical park for ranching but it will be hot.

    Restaurants (depends on where you stay);

    • Rice Village has some unique restaurants
  • I agree with the August weather, whew, it will be hot and humid! If you have downtown plans the Aquarium is fun, there's lots within a few blocks downtown. Rice Village has most shops you can find anywhere, but try the restaurants. Benjy's was a little pricier, but the cuisine is unique. And the sushi just down the block is yummy. Oh, the Chocolate place is amazing if you like desserts. The Galleria mall is huge, lots of couture shops, mixed in with some boutique places. Be aware of the traffic in Houston, it can hold you up in some places. Kemah Boardwalk is on the way to Galveston, kind of touristy. And Galveston has some yummy seafood restaurants. Pleasure Pier is a bit expensive, but if you want to ride the rides it's fun. I've stayed at the Hampton Inn in the Energy Corridor and appreciated the customer service and clean, newer hotel. I've also stayed closer to Reliant Park and those hotels felt a bit older. Be mindful of toll roads too, there's lots of those! Good luck in Houston!
  • August....hot and humid so be prepared.  After about 3 minutes outside you will be sweating.  What part of Houston will you be staying in?  People don't realize the size of Houston.
  • I have no clue.  I can bet it is going to be sweltering but August is the best time for him to take off from work.  I want to see a little bit of everything and visit with folks in Spring and Tomball.

So you recommend hotels in Energy Corridor?

  • The Hampton Inn Energy Corridor had the best staff...the Fairfield Inn Energy Corridor (closer to Katy) was not as friendly and I felt uncomfortable. Plus, it felt newer, and has coffee and tea all day :)
  • Old town Spring has quaint shops worth a half day or so.
  • Really depends on what you want to do. If you want to stay near family, Spring is pretty nice and you can do day trips from there, but be prepared to drive a lot. Nothing is really all that close in this area!  Lots of cute shops in Spring. There is a cute hamburger, beer joint called Hyde's Cafe by the train track.  I recently picked up a friend who was staying by George Bush airport and we drove to Spring. It was only about 20 minutes away. In Houston  closer to downtown or museum district, the most fun places I think are Miller Outdoor Theater, Discovery Green, Art Car Museum. Check out the local city sites and also Houston on the Cheap blog.

Galveston Island can be fun, but I think August can also be the worst month to go. The seaweed is pretty thick on the beaches. I like looking at the old houses, eating at the restaurants, seeing a play at the Opera House. I think you said you had kids. They'd love Moody Gardens, Schillterbahn. You could also take a cruise from Galveston Island.

Hotel Zaza in the museum district looks like it would be fun to stay at and then you can take the metro thing (whatsitcalled, brain just froze) and go to various areas around there.

Nasa is always fun. Kemah boardwalk is nearby.

All in all, though Houston is very spread out. I live in Clear Lake area near nasa. I am 30 minutes to my office in downtown and 30 minutes the other way to the beach. If you stayed in Spring, and wanted to visit Nasa, you'd be looking at over an hour drive.

Downtown/galleria/museum district areas would be most centrally located for you if you are wanting to check out South and North sides of town. Otherwise, stay where you'll spend the most time.

Hot does not even begin to describe Houston in August. We often have visitors from the UK that month. They quickly resolve to plan the next trip another time. When you step off the airplane, it will feel like you just stoned with hot bricks. It is pretty bad. Then again, it is a strange weather year. You might get lucky. Also August is hurricane season, so be careful. Just pack well and be prepared for delays if there is a storm.

  • Hi,

I hope I can help you even though you are leaving in less than a month or so. I have lived here my whole life. Let me tell you this, (besides the weather) Houston is very spread out, very diverse and the traffic can be horrible before 9AM in the morning and after 3:30PM in the evening. Get off the freeways! Otherwise you will be stuck in traffic for hours and hours! If you have GPS use it and I recommend the beltway! Bring quarters because you have to pay for it but it is not 'as traveled' as the freeways are so you will luck out with an easier commute.

Spring is North Houston, nowhere near Galveston or Kemah. You are probably a good 2 hours from it.  Let me recommend you staying in The Woodlands. It is very swanky up there in The Woodlands. They have several nice hotels in the area: Avia, The Woodlands Marriott Waterway and The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The resort has a nice pool area which is great for kids. Nice golfing too. The Woodlands is known for shopping so be prepared to spend. They have little boat tours on the waterway and the park has an area you can rent kayaks to take around Lake Woodlands. You can venture up to Conroe and go for a day or so out on Lake Conroe. Stay overnight at La Torreta Lake Resort.

Old Town Spring is more shopping and its more of a vintage vibe. This is in the heart of Spring. Also, right in Spring is SplashTown. I haven't been in many years but it might be nice. Its a waterpark. The other waterpark is in Galveston..Schlitterbahn.  I would say it would be worth it to make a trip downtown to the museum district for the day. Plenty to see and do. The Chrildren's Museum, The Imax, The Zoo. All are good choices. You could plan an outing to an Astro's Game (baseball). The Galleria is the premier Mall in Houston and that has an ice skating rink in it. There are two outlet malls, one in Conroe which isn't so great since the second one opened off of HW290. Worth going to as well. Kemah is nice but I wouldnt drive all that way in Aug. for it to be overcrowded. Our kids are still out on summer vacation in Aug. so many things are going to be packed. There are several 'adventures' you can do in the Rosenburg area which is just south of houston. They have Skydive Spaceland, MSR Houston where you can take a few laps in a Nascar or drive your own 'fast car' and they have a wake boarding 'waterpark'.

Have fun and feel free to message me with any other questions you may have.

  • my husband lived in Houston for many years and we visit frequently....very hot & humid...Mi Cocina is the best Mexican food...I know there is one located in the Woodlands mall...if you are a BBQ fan, my husband is obsessed w/ Mo's BBQ there
