The Christening That Almost Wasn't...

Since it's a gloomy Monday, I thought I would share our christening adventure from yesterday.  I think you will all get a little chuckle.

We were told the christening would start at 12:30 p.m.  We arrived at 12:20.  As soon as we got there, someone from the church came out and said they are about to start, go sit on the right (St Joseph) side of the church in the front.  So that's what we did.  When we sat down, there was another family on the left hand side of the church.  The priest was talking to them and writing something down.  Evidently, there were two baptisms- DS and a little girl. He then opened up his prayer book and started the service with the little girl in front of her family on their side of the church.  Since I was never at a baptism at this church before and there were only two families, we assumed the priest was going to baptize each baby separately to make it more personal. So we sat through it.  Once he was finished and the other family was taking pictures, he walked over  to the baptismal font, emptied it out and put the lid on it! I then jumped out of the pew and said father, you do know there is another baby to be baptized, right?  He looked at us, started to laugh and said oh, so you're Michael?  It turned out someone in the rectory told the priest there was only one baptism.  They gave him the paperwork for my son.  The other family showed up with their daughter.  The priest assumed he was given the wrong paperwork, which explains when we got there why he was talking to the other family and writing something down.  He said he was wondering why when he invited the family up to the altar for part of the service we just sat there.  He had a nice sense of humor about it and it made for a very interesting service with a lot of laughs.  It also makes for a very memorable story my DS will be able to share with his own children someday about his baptism.  Of interest, DH's family were there first, and you think they would have said something to the priest like oh, there's another baby to be baptized and they are on their way.

As an aside, thankfully, no major DH family drama aside from the fact that MIL refused to talk to anyone in DH's family, including her own daughters, because she was convinced DH's sister didn't invite her to his niece's birthday party two weeks ago.  I am sure my SIL flat out didn't invite her own mother.  MIL also said the same thing about my baby shower- that no one invited her and that's why she wasn't there.  Right.

Here's a pic of the little guy
