My husband just got a job at John's Hopkins (main hospital) for the fall of 2014. We are beginning our search! We have a 3,2 and 9 mo old.
Are there any places that you all would recommend or NOT recommend living? From what I have read, it is not advised to live near the hospital at all. We have also heard that it is safer to rent an apartment in a highrise as opposed to a home or townhome. My husbands commute has to be kept at a minimum. I have read that patterson park, butchers hill, fells point are all fairly 'good' places to live/rent.
Specific names of areas, apartments, neighborhoods would be extremely helpful. Moving in general is quite scary, especially with children.
We currently live in a suburb outside of Dallas and don't have to deal with any , burglaries, theft, etc as far as crime goes.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Re: relocating from TX
I live in Bmore city. I think your list is a great place to start. You will have to deal with some neighborhood small crimes but you'll get that anywhere in Bmore.
For that area, I would look into contacting the Downtown Baltimore FamilyAlliance http://www.dbfam.org/. They are very active in the city.
If you want to live a little further away but still in the city, I'd go for Charles Village, where Hopkins Universary is located (and me too) or Hampden or Oakenshaw. The Village Parents is a good resource.

They aren't as organized as the dbfa but still good.
My husband just finished his 20th year with the City police department so my opinion may differ from some . I would stay away from the City. It's a great idea to rent somewhere first because everyone has their own tolerance level for crime. Call the police department and inquire about the crime in the area you are looking. We moved to Harford County 10 years ago from the City.
Good luck!

I work in the city, but we live in Howard County. For my husband (also a police officer), he would not be able to live in the city. He just couldn't do it. The only crime we have in our neighborhood is the occasional teenager smoking pot or stealing a mailbox.
You could also look just outside the city- there are really nice parts of Baltimore County that are right along that line and are zoned into great schools. Since you have kids, I think that should be a big starting point in where you look, too.
