Long Sorry

I need to vent and I would seriously prefer someone who could run and tell BIL so sorry ladies I choose you!

Of course you all know MIL's house got hit by a crazy storm which involved straight line winds, golf ball size hail that left the ground looking like it snowed for 2 days, and a tornado. The house which is a mobil home needs all new floors, roof, siding, skirting, windows including frames, cabinets and countertops in the kitchen, ramp outside, utility pole, and a fence. There is a chance of other things but this is what the guy told us for sure was included and would be in the estimate he gives.

Here we are 2 weeks after they have seen the property and the insurance company has the report but have not reviewed it and keep telling me to call back then when I do it's the same story. So it's been 3 weeks since the storm and since no one lives there we aren't in a rush to do anything. However we would like to know what the options are and where we are going from here.

Once the insurance company tells us their plan we have to discuss things with BIL and see what he wants to do. We really want them to just total the place so we can put the land up for sale and call it done. But they are really frustrating me because they are basically giving us the run around and the guy just seems like he doesn't want to talk to me. I'm making H call tomorrow even though the guy said Wed just to see if H can get more information out of the guy.

Then once we do find out information it's going to be problems trying to get BIL to do anything. He always complains his job won't let him take off for anything and he always has to fight H and I on everything. H works construction and can't always get signal to make phone calls where he works which is why I usually handle everything. BIL refuses to let his wife do anything because he says it has nothing to do with her and it wasn't her mother so it's not her business.

This frustrates me more because I handle EVERYTHING not to mention BIL owes H and I money every 3 months because of FIL's life insurance that MIL took out when they were married and our policy cost way more than the one BIL has so he pays us the difference. Getting that money is such a hassle last time he paid us a month late and of course the money was due Sat and we don't have any money yet or even a phone call. He never wants to handle anything yet wants to money/reward for it.

We have someone who wants to buy the property she lives next door but wants to pay it out each month for like 6-12 months almost like rent to own. We can't do anything until the insurance stuff is done. H and I would love to get a contract drawn up and do it however BIL will more than likely disagree even though it could give him at least $500 a month depending on the amount we all agree on and then once it's split. He would say no just because he can and because he's not ready to let it go even though he says he is.

The whole thing gives me a headache and frankly lots of stress I don't need. I just needed to vent and I know H is so tired of hearing it from me. Sorry this got so long I just can't stand it anymore.

Re: Long Sorry

  • Hey Ashley,

Just wanted to say i'm sorry you're going through all this! I know how much of a pain brother's can be when trying to get stuff done. I had to deal with my pain in the butt brother when my dad passed... it's not fun.

I hope everything starts looking up for you, and you get the answers you want/need from the insurance company.

  • Ashley,

Does the local agent have a corporate office? Maybe go over his head and call them and let them know you are having communication problems on the local agen level?

Unfortunately  this company is in like Arizona and the people they sent out to inspect it are from Texas. There is absolutely no one local to even talk to. The guy told me to call back today and I fully plan to if he said he still hasn't reviewed it he will get to hear me say very choice words!!

  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this headache!
