XP: Question about my tomato plants (semi-long)

I normally post on the What's Cooking board, but I figured I would ask here too.

So DH and I have 5 tomato plants on our porch in individual pots. I'm not sure what specific kind of tomatoes they are, but they are large tomatoes (not cherry or romas, etc...). They have been planted for about 4-5 weeks or so. We water them about every other day, and they get good sun. There are 3 tomatoes about the  size of a small apricot on 3 different plants. One plant has not sprouted any fruit yet, but it has flowers. The other plant has a very small (marble-sized) tomato. All of the tomatoes are still green.

The three largest tomatoes have not grown in size at all in at least 2 weeks. DH even put miracle grow on them, which didn't do anything. Are we doing something wrong or are they just dud plants? Google didn't offer much help. Thanks!

Re: XP: Question about my tomato plants (semi-long)

  • What's your weather been like? If you haven't had much sun or warm weather yet, they may just be kind of "sleeping."  I can't think of a better way to put it.  We're having a cool snap here and my plants aren't growing much either.

  • Unless the leaves are turning yellow or brown and falling off, you are doing the right things. Sometimes plants simply take a "break" or "sleep", making extra energy to continue with their process. Not sure where you are located, but around here in the midwest, tomatoes don't generally form for picking until later in the season.

Give it time. Since they are in pots, turn the pots periodically so they get the same amount of sun/shade on each side.

  • The weather has been mostly sunny and warm (85-93 degrees) with occasional rain...I'm in the Southeast. The bottom leaves are not yellow. This is kind of out of my element because I'm fairly sure I could kill a cactus. I was not blessed with the green thumb, but I'm trying! Thanks for your help!

  • tomatoes need LOTS of sun - at least 6+ hours a day...are they getting that?? Also how large are the pots your using??  Tomato plants (with the exception of the compact "patio" tomatoes" need to be in huge pots - similar to a 5 gallon bucket.  They also need good drainage...otherwise the roots will rot and it will eventually die....

Even though 5 gallon buckets look silly and are not decorative they are the perfect size (and price) for a tomato plant...drill some holes in the bottom and you're all set!!

     Hope this helps :)
