Onions HELP!

Every single time I slice onions, I am nearly blinded with burning in my eyes. In fact, it's so bad that I have to leave my kitchen for five minutes to let my eyes tear up and rinse out. In the process, I frequently rinse off my cutting board and my knife and I also keep the sliced and unsliced onion covered. But, I still have great difficulty.

Any one have any tips for lessening this?

I have noticed the same thing when I slice onions, although I have experienced slicing onions without this problem... i think that depending on the type of onion, it might cut down the amount of difficulty / eye burning.

Have you noticed this? Maybe you can avoid certain types of onions?

Also, there are those silly looking, but totally legit, onion goggles that you can buy to wear!

I cook with onions a lot, so I may have to investigate these goggles. Seriously. It's awful how much pain I am in from this!

Thanks for the tip. My husband will LOVE this! I can imagine his response when I pull out onion goggles. LOL.

  • I notice that if I keep the onions in the fridge they don't make me cry as much.  So keeping them cold could help.  Although, sometimes, there's just a potent onion that still gets to me.  Then I stick my head in the freezer for like 10-15 secs...it really gets the tears cleared up quickly!

I know this advice sounds ridiculous, but it's what works for me.

  • I'm sure this doesn't help you but I will usually have my husband cut onions for me. He has contacts and they don't really have an effect on his eyes.

I googled and found this link: http://www.livestrong.com/article/508447-how-to-cut-onions-without-having-your-eyes-burn/

  • I have contacts so they don't bother me, but my grandfather always had us cut the onion in half and put the exposed part in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes. You can give it a try

  • Hi there! I've always tried one of these tricks:

-burn a candle near your working area

-breathe through your nose and close your mouth as you slice (this really cuts down on the tears)

    Good luck!

You don't even need special "onion goggles." Swimming goggles work just fine. :)
