Buliding Collapse @ 22nd and Market

Re: Buliding Collapse @ 22nd and Market

  • God this is horrifying.  I really hope the injuries are minor and there are no casualties.
  • it's such a mess down there.  Last I heard from the station they have 11 people hospitalized and two people not accounted for.

Edit: the two people have been located, they are trying to get them out.  All the people transported so far have minor injuries.

WOW thank goodness! I'm so glad this happened during the day when a majority of people were at work or out of the building!

  • Unfortunately I read one person did die, 13 with minor injuries.

    http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9127882

  • 6 fatalities; 13 injured; one pulled alive from the rubble after 13 hours.

Philadelinquency.com is reporting that 311 was contacted in early May (this includes dated emails) about problems at this site: http://www.philadelinquency.com/?p=2738

  • Seriously so sad and looking like it could have been avoided. Why on earth that salvation army store was allowed to remain open during the construction is just beyond me! I think I read that the woman pulled out after 13 hours was in her 60's. Can you imagine how terrifying that experience must have been?!

  • NQ - I was thinking the same thing, how terrifying. How do you stay alive? How do you keep going?

The body's protective use of adrenaline and cortisol (fight or flight) is amazing.

I think in a case like this, you put all your hope in hearing the voices of the rescue workers.   One of the rescuers was quoted as saying that he saw her hand first, grabbed it, and asked her to squeeze (which she did).  It took some time to safely remove the debris around her before getting her out of there. The EMTs said that she was alert and talking in the ambulance, but is listed in critical condition at the hospital.
