Anyone belong to a gardening group or garden club?

Just sort of a GTKY, I'm curious how "involved" everyone is.

If you are, what sort of things does your group do?  Educational stuff, fund raisers, community gardens, etc.  What do you do within the group?

Re: Anyone belong to a gardening group or garden club?

  • To answer my own question, I just recently completed Master Gardener training, and I'm now working through my intern hours.  I think all state's programs work the same way, but we have to complete 50 volunteer hours before we get our official MG pin.  For those who aren't familiar with them, the MG programs are federally funded (through grants) community education and involvement programs run by the extension centers at each state university.

So we do all kind of community outreach and education programs, in addition to a lot of education programs open just to MGs.  We have gardening projects all over the state, ranging from community gardens, to historical gardens, to school projects with kids, to purely ornamental projects at libraries, etc, where we run community events once a month or so.  We do a state-wide garden tour in July, featuring a few of the public garden projects as well as a ton of MG's private home gardens.  Our biggest fund raiser is a plant sale in May.  I'm on the speaker committee, which researches and recruits speakers for our meetings and for larger public events, and I'm still looking around for a regular gardening project that I can commit to.

  • I'm not very involved in my community... yet. But this program you've mentioned sounds very interesting. I think I might look into that. I also should check out what kind of local garden clubs exist in my area.

You should!  I'm not going to lie, the early part of the training was WAY more intense than I was expecting it to be, with soil science and chemistry stuff, but I'm really glad that I did it and I learned a ton from it.  I've met a lot of great people, and am forever learning something new.  I still need a lot of work on my plant identification skills, but I have a lot more confidence with whatever I'm doing in the garden anymore, because I understand the plants a lot better than I used to.

  • Will do! Thanks for info!

I am an industry professional with a related college degree.

I started a garden club in my neighborhood in 2011, and I organize our annual garden tour.

I became a Certified Horticulturist in 2004. We take the same test as the Master Gardeners, except Master Gardeners get to take it "open book" in my state.

I became a licensed chemical applicator, and a Certified Arborist, in 2007.

I graduated the Tree Steward training program in my city in 2004, and serve on the advisory panel. I am currently chair of the education committee.

I joined ASCA in 2008, and graduated the consulting academy in 2010.

I became an ISA Certified Municipal Specialist in 2011, and a Board Certified Master Arborist in 2012.

I was recently appointed to a seat on the Urban Forestry Commission of my city.

  • I have been gardening for the last 7 years and now I would have to say that gardening is my number 1 passion. I live in a condo and do container gardening which I love. I have started a garden club here in my small city of Wood village Oregon. I have been doing the club for the last 6 months and love it. Also my husband and I belong to our Community garden here. I would love to enhance my education with gardening and learn to be a master gardener. How do i go about that? Do you have any ideas of how to get started.     Thanks,
