Not really ML related...
I think I know the answer to this but figured I would put it out there and see if anyone has any recommendations.
We live on a street where maybe 1/2 the residents have driveways, the remainder is street parking. Some of the people who have driveways also park on the street (so as to not block in the other car).
There is no street parking on the other side of the street. The homes across the street have either a driveway in the front of the home or a driveway in the alley.
We have new neighbors that moved in across the street. I would say there are at least 7 people living in the home (4 adults, 3 kids that I have seen). It's an 1100 square foot home with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath... no idea how they are managing that. But they are parking all 4 of their cars on our street, no cars in their driveway. This leaves nearly no parking available for the residents on our side of the street.
Myself and my husband always had "our spot" right in front of our house. Now we don't - we are now parking approx. 40 ft away. It's annoying and inconvenient of course. But I mostly hate not having our cars relatively close for safety concerns. I worry about vandalism, a break in, a hit and run, and not being close enough to do anything about it.
If the people across the street didn't have a driveway that could easily fit 2 cars, I would think "screw it, nothing we can do." But moving 2 of their cars off the street would free up some decent space. Everyone on our side who street parks is basically getting flushed out and forced to park elsewhere.
Now, normally I would simply ask them to oblige and please park in their driveway. But they are not very nice... they are outside a lot, yelling, cursing, we've overheard "I'm not locked up tonight" and something about a "baby daddy." I'm concerned it's going to create trouble because they don't seem like the most reasonable people.
It's a public street. So I'm inclined to think we're sh!t outta luck. Would it be crazy to contact the non-emergency line, see if the police could convince them to park 2 cars in their very spacious driveway in the back? I think the police is pushing it so are there any other township departments that might be able to help?
I hope I don't sound like a whiny b*tch about it. But it sucks getting flushed out of good parking on our otherwise nice, quiet neighborhood. (If I am being a baby about it, say the word!).
This is a post and run, going back to work. Thanks in advance.
Re: Is there anything we can do?
Whatever you do, make sure it's anonymous! I used to live on a city block with a few sets of lousy neighbors, and we both had our cars keyed the same night we had an altercation with one of them regarding their always left outside & barking dog
I second the suggestion of calling the city for an abandoned car. We also had a neighbour (a renter) leave his car parked directly in front of our house with a flat tire. After 3 days I called the township and reported the car, it was towed after 24 hours.
Other than that, just hope that they move... ours didn't, so we did...
Do you have a town council that meets? Usually they meet 2 times a month -- go to the council meeting and bring this up. Maybe this is worth a variance being passed. GL.
Thanks for the tips!
One car has not moved for upwards of a week, so we can do something about that. They have also parked in front of neighbor's driveways twice now. They have even gone so far as to park in the middle of a block (where two cars can easily fit) so no one can fit in front of or behind them. It's as if they are being rude just for the sake of being rude. I really despise people that get off on being jerks.
I am in my house with the window's cracked now and one of them is yelling at someone about child support (perhaps the baby daddy that was previously mentioned... hmm). I don't want to hear these people when I am in my house! What happened to my nice, quiet neighborhood? Wah!
Another thing - they are renters. Do you think if enough people complain to the landlord (some of our neighbors have his # because he used to live in the house) that he can make them/encourage them to park in their driveway?
If they are renters then you should definitely get in contact with the owner. Let the owner know that you will be calling in complaints and that should motivate him/her to reprimand or evict the tenants.
I wish I had big enough balls to park in their driveway, and traipse through their lawn... wave HIIIII as I walk past! We've joked about it but can't do it of course!
We'll work within legal parameters here and hopefully get rid of them soon. They are just gross.
I'm going to get the phone # and call myself. I'll likely be the fifth call they got this week.
This stinks. There isn't much you can legally do...other than the car that has been parked for days. I would put an anonymous note in the mail box, then complain to the land lord, then be glad they are renters who likely will be gone soon. Most people like what you are describing do not stay anywhere for long. Good luck
This could work, and it would solve your noise problem too...
Calling the landlord might help, but calling your city house authority will work better. We are landlords (couldn't sell the house, had to get out, so we had to rent it) and when we got the CO for the rental there were some very hefty fines listed on the application that we'd have to pay if our renter starts causing trouble with the neighbors.
I, as a landlord, will be more inclined to do something if the city called me vs. an annoyed neighbor.
And as a good landlord, I call the housing authority every few months just to see if there have been any complaints called in about our renter.
If you figure this out, I'd love to hear the solution. We had a neighbor move out and rent the house. The street in front of their house has room for two cars and another 1-2 in the driveway. Not sure how many families are living in the house, but they park all over the place including in front of my house and just leave the cars there.
I had one of them towed after I noticed the plates were expired, the inspection was past due, and a tire was flat.
The housing authority sounds like an excellent idea, I was going to suggest that.
Can you "lay in wait" and snatch the parking space?
Great suggestion but someone already called. They said they are ok for now, can have up to 9 people (I think). But they are still under investigation per the township. That's probably a load of bull but we can hope.
We have been doing this... as soon as they leave we move our cars. But as soon as we go to work the next day they snag them back. I don't think they work so they can easily get the spots back. If this is what we have to do, so be it. It just seems kind of ridiculous to keep playing this game.
