Something is eating my pepper plants

Something is eating my pepper plant leaves.  There are bites out of the edges of the leaves, and some leaves completely gone! A few leaves have holes, but for the most part the damage is on the outsides of those that are left.  I looked for hornworms, but didn't see any.  The weird thing is, my tomatoes a few feet away are largely unaffected.

I have a feeling it's a squirrel or chipmunk.  Any ideas to get it to stop?  Cayenne pepper on the leaves didn't work, maybe I need to make pepper spray?

Re: Something is eating my pepper plants

  • I know to keep the squirrels away I used crushed red pepper flakes right on top of the dirt about a foot radius around the plant to keep them away...it helped..maybe a larger radius would help?  Is there a way for you to place a wire fence around the plant or elevate it (if its in a pot of course!! haha).  I always keep my hot peppers in a pot so the heat of the vegetable doesn't affect my other veggies :)

  • Can't elevate it since its not in a container, and I was trying to avoid putting up a fence , but that might be the best solution.  Thanks for your tips!

  • I second putting them in pots if you can!
    • Controlling pests with the proper pest control items is your best bet. Do not touch your eyes while handling these pests. Flush your eyes immediately with water if something gets into it.
