weight gain after going off BC?

I went off BC about 3 months ago since my H and I are TTC. Ever since then I've realized my weight has steadily been creaping up, about 5 -7 lbs. Now don't get me wrong I realize it's not that much weight, but for someone like me who has pretty much weighed the same for the past ten years or so, it's kind of odd. My diet and exercise regimen hasn't changed. If anything, we moved out of the city and into the suburbs and we eat and drink out WAY less often now.

I also feel very bloated and even some of my pants feel super tight. Jeans I fit into a few months ago, and have worn for the past few years, are now hard to button. I was on yasmin, which I know has a diuretic in it, so I was thinking maybe it's water retention. Of course google made me paranoid I have ovarian cancer, bc these are also symptoms of that (i'm a little neurotic as it is lol).

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not that concerned about the weight gain, just hoping this is normal.

Re: weight gain after going off BC?

  • Dr. Google told me last month that I might have malaria. That was (not) a fun couple of days.

I know that weight loss *and* weight gain are usually listed as possible side effects of the pill, so going off of it could certainly affect your weight as well. Definitely talk to your doctor if it really worries you, but 5-10 lbs in a few months is probably nothing to be concerned about.

  • Please don't tell me this OP.  I just went off BC (not TTC, TTA via NFP) and the last thing I need is to gain weight.  Crap.

Now that that's out of the way... don't Google anything!  You will freak yourself out!  I obviously don't have any experience but anytime your body is re-adjusting after being on medicine you're bound to have side effects.  It could be short term until your hormones regulate.  You're very thin in your siggy picture so I'm sure with a few extra pounds you still look great (I kind of hate you right now... kidding!).

If you're really concerned you could always get in touch with your OB or even a family physician to talk about it and see if they have any recommendations for combatting the weight gain.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you ladies. I think when it comes down to it, I need to lay off google! I made an appt with my obgyn next week, just to be safe. I'm not really concerned with the weight gain, just more paranoid if anything. I'm a nurse, and every day seeing the kinds of things I see has made me a bit of a hypochondriac lol.

    Thanks for the replies!

  • Let us know what you find out.  I came off BCP a year ago and also gained 5-10 lbs.  I thought it was because I was getting "older".  I am only 26.  haha.
