Our eat-in kitchen has a space for the table that is 12' x 12'.
Currently, we have an oval table in the space that is 42" wide by 60" long. It has four legs. It seats our family of four very comfortably and there is ample space to walk around.
A new baby is coming in July, and eventually I want to change our table to a round pedestal table so the chairs and highchairs will fit at any place around the table top and not be blocked by table legs.
So, we need a table that seats 5 comfortably and could hold 6 if we decided to add in another chair for a visiting guest.
I've been trying to figure this out using online searches, but I'm lost...
What is the minimum and maximum diameter I can go for round table dimensions to seat 5- 6 people in a 12' x 12' space?
Re: Round Table Top?
Most round tables with pedestals come in at about 36", 48", sometimes 60". I know because I've just gone crazy trying to find a pedestal table to use with the banquette I was building. I wanted the pedestal so people could slide around it easily and not have legs get in the way. FWIW: I ended up making my own rectangular table with a Singer sewing machine base I got at an antique store. I couldn't find anything reasonably priced because pedestal tables have huge wooden bases.
My recommendation would be to shop online and then go to a furniture store with a tape measure. Many round pedestal tables have insertable leaves that expand the table into an oval and you can seat more when you have guests. I have a table like that in my family room we use for family dinners. When the leaf is added in the middle I can seat 8 people........when it's not there I can seat 5 comfortably. It's 48" around, and expands to about 70" with the leaf in. That's less than 6 feet long and should more than fit in an area of 12 x 12.
I had my eye on this one at Crate & Barrel, but couldn't justify spending $500 on a table: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/avalon-45-white-extension-dining-table/s129252 . It is 45" around and has a leaf. I looked EVERYWHERE on line for something similar and had trouble because a lot of wood is used for something that sturdy that lasts. So it's not cheap.
I did look at second hand stores because whatever I bought, if it wasn't white, was going to be painted in a cottage style and distressed anyway. I didn't care if it was "worn". You may not find it quickly, but I did find some, but decided on a rectangle instead because it fit in a smaller area than you have available.
Good luck.
