Re: Ok Team Tortoise...

  • I'm still recovering, haha!  But, I ran the whole thing, so I achieved my goal...kudos to Lisa for being my running buddy for the day, I have a feeling if I hadn't had someone with me I would have been tempted to walk a few times for a break!

I will say, I had a great time!!  It was more fun than I thought it would be; my only complaints were that they needed more water stations (there was only one) and that running on the gravel threw me off.

I'm glad Brian ended up bringing the kids...Jake was overwhelmed when they first got there, and he was really upset (he doesn't always do well with crowds), but once he calmed down, he had fun playing with Jackson and I loved having them at the finish line :)  They had a sign for me & everything! :)

So proud of all of team tortoise, and a huge thanks for Sarah & Gwen...the whole thing was their original idea, but letting me join them gave me the motivation I needed to kick start this whole running thing!

  • I loved seeing all of the pictures!  I'm so glad you had fun.  Way to go on running the entire thing - seriously, that is awesome for your first 5k!  What a big accomplishment, you should be proud of yourself!!

And, considering that neither Emmy or I was a runner before a few months ago, we did pretty well. They started us around 8:55 and we crossed the finish line before 9:30. So somewhere between 30 and 35 minutes for the 5K. I was pretty happy with that.

I had a lot of fun, and the fact that it was a non-competitive race with people of all skill levels made it a lot less intimidating for me. I'm not a "runner" but being able to pass some people as we went along made me feel good and gave me an incentive to keep running when I wanted to walk. The fact that Emmy was right at my pace and skill level and that we were able to stick together also helped a lot with keeping me from taking a walking break.

Now I want to do another 5K before Disney (and I'm also planning the Morgantown Color Me Rad in September), and I also want to find a kids run, because Jackson desperately wanted to run this with me. I want to find something to do with him.

I'm so glad Gwen, Sarah and Melissa did it as well. It was a great morning :-)

Send the kids and hubby off in the 1 mile fun run while you do the 5K.  And if you do it, let me know because it's practically in my backyard and I'll do it with you.

  • Team Tortoise-you'll be happy to know that I was able to scrub all of the paint off (and my tattoo!) before the baby shower guests arrived later that afternoon :)

I'm driving home from Baltimore with my sister on the 9th...maybe we could all do it together on the 10th. I'll talk to her (though she'd be attempting to get first in her age category, and not running with me) about signing up. I'll let you know. That would be a great opportunity for Jackson to do his run :)

I still have a pink patch on my arm by my elbow. I got tired of scrubbing and decided to try again tomorrow morning to get the last of it off. All the other colors came off no problem, but the pink hates me.

  • Lisa, I'll do one with you!  Mason always wants to run with me too, so I think he would enjoy it!  I used to live in Brookline, so that would be a fun one.  (Also, it's only two weeks away, but I'm doing the Peace Love Run at North Park on the 23rd, if anyone is interested.)

Meghan, I looked that one up after you posted about it last week, but then realized we already have plans that day, boo!  I need to find another one to keep me motivated...I just sent the steelers one link to Brian to see if he's interested in that, it would be fun that Jake could participate, too!

  • The Steelers one looks awesome, but we'll be on vacation that weekend!  Keep me posted if anyone signs up for others - I need to stay on track with my running, I've been slacking a little bit lately.
  • So I only trained for one day (whoops - really thought this would give me motivation) and I thought I'd be a hot mess. I definitely underestimate how much distance training I do with dance team and how that would help me. I dance 3 miles like it's no big deal, so I'm not sure why I was so intimidated by running. I actually felt great when I was done and really enjoyed myself! Today I'm walking like an old lady though!!

My biggest complaint was running on the rocks. I was terrified to bust up my ankle, so I did a lot of walking on those parts.

Decidedly I'm never going to be a runner, because I need people around me pushing me to continue. I'm all about group classes and apparently 5k fun runs so I have motivation. I don't think I'd be good a training to run, but I would definitely do another 5k.

I'm so glad we all did it together!! :) And that Gwen and I came up with this ridiculous plan to begin with.

  • For being a non runner, I had an absolute blast! It was so much fun to do it with friends (thanks Sarah, Emmy, Lisa, Miss, Melanie and Tim!). It was a really great no pressure race & considering how little training I got in, I loved it. I'm sore today, but not unbearable. My only complaints were the gravel running surface and I wish they'd have let us know how far we'd gone. Miss and I were groaning and moaning thinking we weren't even halfway done and it turned out we were almost done! We finished in the 45-50 min range and I'm darn proud of it:) I'd do it again, which is not something I thought I'd be saying prerace! Glad the paint came off for the shower, Emmy!
