Dog questions # 932 - 935

Hi all.  Our dog ate Cesar dog food for the last 6 years.  A friend recommended Nutro line.  I have started transitioning her dry food from whatever she was on (I have no clue, my dad gave me a big container with dry food in it) and the Nutro small breed dry food.   Should I change her wet food? Does she even need wet food?  Is Nutro a better brand?

Question #933 - The dog has whatever one calls a dog period.  I put a liner and washable cover on her.  J is fighting me against getting her fixed because in his mind we will breed her.  That is not happening for numerous reasons.   Some co-workers said small breeds (she is a Bichon Frise) will develop breast cancer if they do not have a liter.  J says getting dogs fixed/spayed causes other medical problems.  Are your pets spayed/neutered? WWAND?

#934 Grooming - I took her to Dirty Dawgs in Highland.  Any recs for a place between Highland and Fishkill; Poughkeepsie to New Windsor?

#935 Dog Insurance and Vet in Pet Smart  - Do you have dog insurance?  Do you use the vets in Pet SMart.  I took her to Gardiner Animal Hospital which was highly recommended but honestly, out of my way.   I have heard from 4 pet owners not to use Middlehope Vet; only 1 friend likes them.   Any suggestions would be grand.

P.S.  Thanks for reading.  I never thought I would say this but I am loving my pooch.

Re: Dog questions # 932 - 935

  • As for food- i've never fed a dog wet food so im not sure of its benefits or not. And i have no experience with Nutro.  We feed Ben Blue Buffalo (he gets the grain free type because he has a sensitive stomach)   But i wanted to tell you if you do decide to switch her food, you do it gradually where you are mixing the two foods together, first more of her food and alittle of the new and then gradually adding more of the new until its all the new food.

Question #933- Our dog is neutered. I had heard that neutering your dog reduces the risk of cancer but i'm really not 100% sure. I have never heard of negative side effects to getting a dog fixed.  We waited until Ben was a year because of his size and breed, that was at our vets recommendation. How old is she? I would run this by the vet and see what they think.  Personally I wouldn't want to deal with her being in heat every month.

Question #934- i am no help and Ben doesn't get groomed.

Question #935- We currently don't have pet insurance, but its something i keep thinking about.  I have never used the vets at PetSmart, but my sister in law uses them for her cat and has never had a problem.   We use Otterkill Animal Hospital, but its way over by me in Campbell Hall and would probably be too far out of your way.

I think thats all I got for you- all in all not a huge help ;) haha

  • I Dont know anything about Nutro....Our dog is on Eukanuma....he has a horrible sensitive  stomach and it is the only dog food that didnt make him sick.  When switching make sure you gradually change over. We only give our dog dry food so I am no help on the wet food.

Question #933 - Our Dog is also fixed. We were not intending to breed him and the vet suggested having him fixed because it does reduce the risks of other things.

#934 Grooming -I used to have a cocker spaniel and we used Amys Doggie doos in newburgh she is on rt17k across from stewart airport....we loved her the number is 845 567-3114

#935 Dog Insurance and Vet in Pet Smart  - Do you have dog insurance? we do not have insurance. as far as a vet we now use a Vet in red oaks mill to far from you....I have heard good things about Flannery Animal Hospital in newburgh. I have never used them but friends have.

  • Thanks ladies.  I really appreciate your advice.

And she will be getting spayed in late July/August.  A bit sad.  Vet said she will be considered a senior pet next year.

  • We used Nutro for my old bug dogs.. We stopped because of price, otherwise it was great. I had the dogs going through a bag every 2 weeks and at $50+a bag it was a fortune.  We use ProPlan now because that was what the breeder was using and we only do wet food during hunting season when he is out so much he needs the extra food.

We fixed our ChowChow at 8 weeks old. We had no choice because she was a SPCA pup and I did fix Guineas at around 10 months for domaince issues. Our Pit and current dog are not fixed.  We haven't decided about breeding yet which is why we have held off.

We use a vet H does work for so we have a hook up and inlaws use a place in Pawling, too far from you.

We don't have pet insurance because our dog came guarenteed by breeder for basically everything but hit by a car and general old age. If he ever stops hunting or becomes gun shy we get a new one. Crazy hunters.

  • I live in the New Winsor/Newburgh area. I might be a little late.. but we have a yorkie ( 3 1/2 years old). We also switched from Caesars to Nutro Natural Choice (chicken and brown rice) mixed ( wet with sprinkle of dry). We go to Flannery animal Hospital and LOVE IT. There is always appointment times and a million and one doctors. We had to get a knee surgery there when she was a baby and we met the surgeon directly a couple times so he could check her out and the surgery and recovery went great. We use Petsmart in newburgh for her haircuts and they are reasonably priced. I have also been thinking about pet insurance but I haven't done my research. Have you found out anything more about it?

I'm really late, but i have 2 Maltese. I use Merrick wet and dry. I just give them a little dry to supplement their wet. We go to Brook Farm Veterinary and love it. I would even board them there (if I had too, but we always take them on vacation with us so it hasn't come up) The vets really seem to love the animals. We have pet insurance which we got after my boy tore his ACL and ended up needing many vet visits and it cost us a fortune. If he had needed surgery the price would have been even more outrageous. So since they are getting older (6 and 8) we purchased ASPCA pet insurance. Enjoy your new puppy!
