Sharp headaches at orgasm

Hi ladies, just wondering if anyone has heard of or deals with "sexual headaches", as I have heard them called. My husband gets headaches that get stronger as he gets near orgasm that end with an explosive sharp pain at orgasm. So much so that he will lay there and writhe on the bed for a few minutes sometimes because the pain is so intense, then it gradually wears down. The better the orgasm, the sharper the pain (he said it happens with sex as well as oral and masturbation). The pain is at the base of his skull and and travels up his head when it's bad. It's not every time, he says it's about 1 in 10 times, but I think it's more like 1 in 5. I feel bad, it's so much so that he says the pain outweighs the pleasure, and I'm afraid he will stop wanting to have sex. The part that scares me is in my research, it said it could be a form on aneurism -- his mom and his paternal grandma both died of aneurism, so it runs in both sides of his family :(   We plan to see a doctor about it to get the aneurism theory checked out, but haven't done anything yet.

Re: Sharp headaches at orgasm

  • Please please get that checked out ASAP, my oma had an aneurism clipped but my stepdad wasn't told about it, he was getting headaches that he described as extremely sharp pain radiating into his jaw and to the back of his head, they started on a caravan trip in april 2010 (aged 52) and he passed away instantly june 2010 whilst helping a friend renovate a house one morning, from 2x burst berry aneurisms at the base of his brain, lifting a bathtub out and the increased his blood pressure and caused it to blow, my aunty came across notes from my oma's medical records showing they had found hers during surgery after a stroke but managed to clip it, this is my first post, really felt I needed to tell you, good luck! Didn't mean to scare you, I feel awful but sounds familiar and can be prevented!
  • I agree, get that checked out ASAP. Something similar started happening to me a few months ago, but in my case it was a full fledged migraine that would decide to pay me a visit (usually for between 4-8 hours). The first time it about scared my husband to death since it was my worst ever migraine, so he took me to the ER where they ran a bunch of tests.  Nothing came back as being out of the ordinary, so they referred me to a neurologist. My neurologist couldn't find anything either although he told me that it's more common than you would think. In my case we ended up creating a preventative plan, which includes eating very few processed foods (I already was mostly doing that on my own) and daily exercise for at least 45 minutes. He also prescribed me some meds in case it happens again. I've come to realize that now, pretty much the only times I get headaches or migraines is when I skip out on my exercise for the day, so it's a pretty good incentive for me to work out.

I hope that in your situation, it's something that can easily be prevented and is nothing too serious. Best of luck!

  • I just don't get your response.... with his family history and what is going on... with or without insurance...how can you put off seeing a doctor???  How would you feel if he dies because he put off going to the docs and you let him?

  • I agree with pp... you can't gamble with your (or DH's health).  I am a health care provider and used to be in the Navy.  I had a 38 year old very fit, healthy Marine come to me and mention in passing some symptoms he had over the weekend.  Within hours, he was being medevac'd to a major medical center where they determined he had an inoperable blockage.  He ignored symptoms for years because he figured that he was young and incredibly healthy.

Unfortunately, the next time could be something much worse than a headache.  I know health care is expensive (having left the military) but how can you put a price on DH's life?
