Apps with 0% dairy?

Hi everyone! I am throwing a bday party on Monday for a friend of mine who just found out she has a bad allergy to anything dairy and milk (not lactose intolerant). Apparently there is milk in many things, even those we would not suspect, so our choices for apps are a little limited. I myself am a huge cheese lover so I'm finding it hard to come up w/apps that have no dairy. I am going for a filling apps and cocktails menu. Besides the usual veggies, hummus, and fruit, can you please suggest some recipes I could look up? TIA!

Re: Apps with 0% dairy?

  • What level of allergy are we talking? Like typically French bread doesn't contain dairy, but it may have been baked in a butter-coated pan. Is that ok or no? Or can she just not eat actual dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, etc?

  • I think she can have butter just no dairy products like milk, etc., and things that have milk product in them

  • I'm a vegan so I may be able to give some ideas of things that don't include dairy. A lot of these are pretty easy to prepare ahead of time, and they all get devoured when we have friends over. Hope these provide some inspiration!

     - Tomato Basil Crostini
-Asian Spring Veggie rolls with a ginger or peanut dipping sauce
    -Falafel
    -Edamame
    - Marinated tomatoes with basil
    -Spicy roasted chickpeas
    -Potstickers
-Fried pickles (very popular since we live in the south, lol)
    -Jalapeno and Rosemary potato fritters
-Bruchetta (you can mix it up and do a tomato version, or one with mushrooms, or even roasted red peppers or avocados)
    -Deviled Eggs
    -Samosas

?Laugh whenever you can. Keeps you from killing yourself when things are bad. That and vodka.?

Well, since butter is a dairy product, I'm sorta confused. I guess I'd just plan a veggie & meat menu like pps have suggested.

If you can find French bread that hasn't been in contact with butter, you can build crostini with various veggie and fruit toppings. A tray where people can build their own would be cute. Also check the health food aisle of your grocery store for dairy free chips to use with guacamole, black bean salsa, fruit salsa, etc.  Shrimp cocktail. Bacon-wrapped dates. Nuts. Crab cakes if you can find dairy-free breading. And here's a good directory of dairy free apps.

I usually lurk, but with 2 kids with dairy allergies I had to jump in. Just b/c you can't have cheese, you could do an olive bar. My DD LOVES olives. You could also google paleo recipes as most of them should not have dairy.

FWIW you can make lots of recipes that would normally have butter and just use subs. Earth's best makes a really good butter sub and some unsalted butter doesn't have any cream or milk.

You could do the little cocktail weenies, meatballs (just read the ingredients to make sure there is no cheese in the breadcrumbs), deviled eggs,  but I agree with pp about chips, salsa and guac. You could also do a really pretty veggie tray with various colored bell peppers with hummus, our Fresh Market makes a yummy seafood salad that could also be served in a bell pepper for a pretty presentation.  Just make sure when you are reading ingredients you avoid hidden dairy too like whey, cassein and cream. GL and I"m sure your friend will appreciate your efforts.

  • Another allergy mom here!

The best way to approach this is to find ethnic cuisines that don't contain dairy and see what they offer: chinese/japanese/thai foods almost never contain dairy, so you can go to town on sushi, dumplings, shabu-shabu, satay skewers, etc.

Check out kosher "fleischig" recipes -- although there are lots of dairy dishes in Jewish cuisine, religious law prevents eating milk and meat together, so there is a whole dairy-free culinary tradition. Here's a quick list.

Lastly, although it sounds incredibly weird and wrong, there is no dairy in most refrigerated cylinders of crescent rolls, or in frozen Pepperidge Farm puff pastry sheets. Lord knows what they are actually putting in there, but it won't be an allergen for your friend. Pigs in Blankets for everyone!
