Camping up north - Duluth area

Have you found a great campsite up north that you love? I would love to know about it. We are going to take little man on his first camping trip this year (still not sure when yet) so I am looking for a place that is little kid 'safe' with a lot of trails close. 

One stop we will make is to goose berry falls. so other ideas would be great.

We typically camp at Cascade River park. It isn't nearly as busy as some of the others up there and the waterfalls are really pretty.  I'd have to look at a map but we always get the same site - it is nice and big and because of the way the trees are, pretty private.  The only downside is that one of the stand alone bathrooms is on the other side of it which is nice and not nice at the same time.  Nice because it isn't far to walk in the dark, not nice because you have other people walking to it in the dark.

I just looked and we always book the C-5 spot.  We talked about reserving A-5 next time because it has a view of the lake.

So all the times we are free to go up there are booked but they seem to have a lot of "first come" kind of spots do you think our chances are good to just go & hope we get a spot? or have you always found it to be booked ?

I think if you go early enough, you should be able to get a spot.
