Two cleaning questions

Hi all!

I have two questions: 1. We just bought stainless steel appliances. How does everyone clean theirs? I've heard so many different methods I'm not sure which one to use.

2. How do you clean your humidifier? I'm ready to toss it out the window. I empty it every day and once a week soak hot water and vinegar. That doesn't appear to do sh*t. The base is covered in that red/pink mold no matter what I do. It's so frustrating. Any ideas?

thanks!!

    thanks!!

We have used Stainless Steel Magic on our appliances every so often, but in between, we'll use Sun and Earth glass cleaner.

Humidifier--use some peroxide. The red/pink stuff is not mold, it's serratia.  They are an airborne organism that usually thrives during seasons where you have your windows open. You'll sometimes see a similar pink/red residue in toilets or sinks, too. Same stuff. Harmless.

  • Our appliances are crappy, so no help there.

Mr. Beagle cleans ours out regularly, and then puts a little bit of bleach in with the water.  The smell dissipates, but that's still probably not something you want to do.

See, i've heard glass cleaner and then I heard use Pledge, which seems odd to me. But man ours all look gross from construction, etc so I need to do something SOON! I feel like glass cleaner is less harsh.

HAHA. It's useless crap that just stores in my brain.  For the life of me, I can NEVER recall a person's name after I meet them. It's terrible.  But I remember odd facts or info like this all the time.  The mister refers to me as the "steel trap."

Pledge?  Maybe Pledge makes their own version of stainless cleaner, but I wouldn't use the furniture polish on the appliances.  Sun and Earth is a local KoP company and uses all natural ingredients. Found in most supermarkets, you can also order online. When cleaning stainless, I spray the rag with the cleaning product, as opposed to spraying directly on the stainless.

Yeah I thought Pledge was a bit odd. I haven't tried anything yet so they're just filthy. Totally just going to buy some Sun and Earth. Done and done! Thanks :)

    Two things

    1. I feel SO much better knowing this isn't harmful. I've thrown out so many humidifiers over the years though!

    2. I'm going to throw this into conversation some day just to feel smarter than everyone else because seriously who knows this!! You are a steel trap!!

  • 1. Vinegar is really good at cutting grease and oil.

    2.  Are you using distilled water in the humidifier?

  • 1--we use a stainless steel cleaner that we got from Best Buy of all places. Its in their home appliance section by the refrigerators, vacuums, coffee pots etc.

2-- serious first world problem, I too have faced many times. My new Crane humidifier is the easiest to clean yet, but still traps grossness in a few unreachable places. I clean the humidifier base every other day with an antibacterial bathroom spray, rinse it with hot water, and dry it with a towel so its totally clean and dry. The water reservoir is never super clean, but I try to at least kill anything thats in there by running a small amount of vinegar water through it every week or so.

Im antsy to use bleach or other harsh chemicals because Im afraid it will still be in the humidier and then get into the air and essentially, baby will be breathing in bleach. Maybe Im being alarmist, but Im just not comfortable with anything outside of vinegar.

This would be why I use my humidifier as little as possible!

  • I use the normal Pledge (in the yellow spray bottle) on our stainless appliances and they come out looking awesome. The stainless steel/electronics pledge leaves smears and marks on our appliances.

We get the red/pink stuff, too. It's not mold like Erbur said above. I just learned about that maybe a year or so ago.
