We just got our furminator earlier this week. I had been eying them for awhile and ended up running across a brand new one on ebay and buying for $14. (score!)
So far I love it. The amount of fur it removed is insane. I joked with DH that his parent's shitzu was visiting because the wad of fur looked like an actual dog.
I've read to do it once or twice a week but I don't know that that will be enough for my Aussie. She has semi long super shedding hair. I've used it twice so far 2 days apart. Before the furminator I just had a regular dog comb and I combed most every day.
So...
How often do you furminate?
What breed dog/cat do you have?
Any other furminator advice for a newbie ?
Re: Furminator: How often do you brush?
I have them for the cats (one long hair and one short hair). The cats hate them. Hate. Them. Luckily they just express their hate with some grumble growling and squirming, no hissing and biting and scratching.
The pup doesn't have one yet since she still has a puppy coat and doesn't really shed.
With the cats, we use it maybe once a month, but you're right. We brush off enough fur to make two more cats! It seems like it's never ending and I can never get even close to all of it, but it does help keep our carpets from becoming massive fur balls.
Grooming in general for our pup - Well, we do that every day. She's a Newfoundland, so when she gets her adult coat, it's going to be a double coat, long and thick, and she's going to be BIG. Getting her used to the brushing is a big priority since we'll actually HAVE to do it every day once she's older. At least a bit every day, then once a week a massive full groom brush out with ear cleaning, nail trims, etc.
Depending on how your dog is reacting it might be helpful to do at least small grooming session every other day or so to get them used to the Furminator. It's not really like a lot of other brushes. I also think grooming helps solidify your bond with your four-legged buddy, so I don't mind doing it often. Just sitting in front of the TV brushing a bit, you know?
You said pretty much the same thing I was going to say, only much more eloquently! We recently bought a furminator for our cats and dog about 2 months ago. For our long haired cat we use it about twice a week and use the normal brush every other day. He likes it, but he's weird. If you leave a bruch lying around he will actually try to brush himself! Our other cats hate it, but we do them about once every couple of weeks. They're still kittens though and are short haired, so they don't need too much.
Our dog is a St. Bernard and German Shepperd mix and is still a puppy so he doesn't really shed, but he's starting to get his adult coat in and he has gotten much "fluffier" for lack of a better word. We're planning to start use the furminator about twice a week and doing brushes the other days. Luckily he loves getting groomed so it's easy for us.
She's an Aussie and only a puppy but she sheds like no body's business. I'm petrified of her adult coat!
She is actually seems to enjoy the brushings. Prior to the furminator I combed her daily or every other day anyway but pretty much got nothing compared to the furminator. She still gets wiggly and playful but with a "leave it" will refrain from going after the brush.
This morning I did it on the rug (easy to vacuum) while DD "helped" and we watched veggie tales haha. I think I'm going to at least go for every other day if not every day. I don't mind it and if it helps with the hair it can't hurt...right?
We have a 7 month old golden retriever. She sheds quite a bit. I've been thinking about getting one of those, but I've heard horror stories about it stripping their coats.
I think that as long as I don't use it too much, it won't be a problem. But I'm still wary of it. I'm such a chicken once I've heard something bad like that. But all of your experiences seem to be positive, so maybe I'll get brave one day and buy one.
I brush my cats at least once a week, only because they hate it with the fire of 1,000 suns. For example, If my cats see me going for the drawer with their grooming implements, they promptly leave the room and go hide.
At any rate, I should be brushing my persian daily, but he won't have it. Once a week is working for us; no mats, minimal shedding, etc. My other cat is a DSH so I don't need to worry about matting necessarily but the once a week brushing (furminating) really helps with his shedding also. I can definitely tell when it's rolling around the week mark when they usually get brushed.
Best of luck to you, though. I've always had better success with furminators and dogs, I hope yours sits nicely for you and lets you groom her.
