sprained toe

Hi everyone! I sprained my toe (the middle one) a little over a week ago. It's gotten a lot better in the past week.  The swelling is gone.  It's still black-and-blue around the joint.  I can walk most of the time, but every so often it will start hurting and when it does it will be sore for a while after.  My question is I'm a musician, and I was asked to play a parade on July 4th.  I don't know if I should say yes.  I don't know how my toe will be by then or, if it's not healed, if walking will make it worse or just hurt.  These parades are usually about a mile long.  I would really hate to turn down work though.  What should I do?

Re: sprained toe

  • I broke my middle toe a few years ago and I was told to rest for a week or so and after that just take it easy for a bit. I think the level of pain you are experiencing should help you decide whether to go ahead with the parade or not as its your body telling you what your limit is.

  • I have a sprained or broken toe right now, and have in the past as well (slightly accident prone apparently), I don't think the parade will make it worse, might make it hurt if its still sore to walk very far, but it won't "set back" the healing time. After about a week, its pretty much over the worst. If you can deal with the pain, I wouldn't let it stop you from doing something, not being in the parade isn't going to make much difference in healing time by that point.

I would suggest you tape it up before you go, and ice it after the parade if it hurts.
