Got a job offer, when to tell I'm PG?

I was laid off in August 2012 and have been looking for a job ever since.

I get an email from a company (I don't even remember applying for since there have been so many) asking if I was still interested in a position. I emailed back yes.

He calls me a few days later (this past Friday) and asked me to come in for an interview that day. I told him no problem. Everything went good, and when I turned in the application, he offered me the position! I verbally accepted and I'm starting this Monday at 8am.

Now my dilemma is that I am 5 months pregnant. I know that I don't have to disclose is to them (per law) but I think that I want to tell them as soon as the paperwork is signed. I'm just so scared and nervous!

I plan on going back to work after the baby is born, so I'm hoping that they are willing to work something out with me.

Anyone have a good way to bring it up/tell them? Has anyone gone through this recently?

Re: Got a job offer, when to tell I'm PG?

  • I would probably tell them right around the same time the paperwork is signed so that you are giving them a fair warning/plenty of time to plan but at the same time you are also protecting your job security :) I am also almost 5 months pregnant! I told my current company just recently and they were super supportive/happy it was so much easier than I thought it would be :)

  • I actually came to this board for pretty much the same advice. I'm into a third round of interviews and in between applying and the first two rounds and now, I found out I'm pregnant; only about 5 weeks along. I've been debating whether or not to pull myself out only because I won't be eligible for FMLA or short term disability by the time I deliver (as long as all goes to plan). Anyway, one thing I read was that if you notify the company about your pregnancy prior to getting an offer, you're opening them up to a lot of legal liability. Not sure how true that is, but I suppose it would almost force their hand into offering you the job to avoid any discrimination claims. My plan is to continue interviewing and see what happens. If I don't get the offer, then nothing needs to be said. If I do, then I'll have to make some kind of decision at that point. I just hate to waste everyone's time if this wont' work since the next round of interviews is in a four hour block (way too long in my opinion, especially for a third round). Anyway, I would tell them soon after starting. Do you know what kind of maternity leave or other benefits your new company offers?
