Where to honeymoon in America?

Hi everyone, I am from England and my fianc? and I are getting married at the end of march next year. We would love to honeymoon somewhere in America but are really undecided as to where to go. I have been to Florida and New York and he spent a year living in California so we would like it be be somewhere neither of us has been before.

we really liked the idea of staying at/or near Yellowstone National park, however am I right in thinking early April would not be a good time as isn't much of it closed to the public? If so, any other suggestions? Kind of adventure/exploring based holiday and not a lazy beach holiday! Any ideas welcome!

  • Try Kiawah Island near Charleston, South Carolina!

  • You should try some of these places. You are going to love them.

  • Look up Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It is absolutely beautiful, and is another National Park. I'm originally from that area, and there is a million different things to do.

That site will give you dates for what is open and closed in Yellowstone.

Doesn't Wyoming also have a Grand Teton national park?  Not sure how far it is from Yellowstone.  Or there's Glacier Park in Montana.  If you wanted to get a car and visit several different parks.

  • Arizona is beautiful. The Grand Canyon all the way.
  • Depends on what you're into! If you like hiking, nature, and being off the beaten trail, you should take a drive on the North Shore in Minnesota. Seriously relaxing yet fun with all the awesome state parks along the way - and of course, super nice people. http://www.northshorevisitor.com
  • Colorado is really beautiful, and very mountainous, with lots of places to go hiking and exploring.

If you're looking for a city outside of New York, maybe Chicago?

Also, don't know if by New York you meant just the city, but if you haven't explored upstate, the Fingerlakes are beautiful!

All of the places listed above have their own character and charm. It just depends on what you are looking for.

    Agreed!

Also, Arches and Mesa Verde National Parks are beautiful. I know Mesa Verde has a "resort" (with no internet or cable)

  • You should probably look in the Travel board.

You got some great suggestions, but here in the US, holidays mean celebrations like Christmas and Easter.  What you call holidays we call vacation.

Again, this board gave some great suggestions, but you might find more useful information on the Travel board.

  • I am partial to Michigan. We have the longest freshwater shoreline and adorable shoreline towns. Google it!
  • Oooh, I also went to Yellowstone last summer and it was awesome! I really like MI though. Very laid back, and TONS of rails to trails/ biking/hiking opportunities! Really, come to MI!
  • I really liked Seattle when I was there. Niagra Falls is nice- and you can go across to the Canadian side too!
Las Vegas- there's lots to do aside from gambling- shows, concerts etc. and you can drive to the Hoover Dam and take the tour there.

  • Hi,

I live in Wyoming :).  Yeah, April could be pretty iffy for a Yellowstone trip; chances are pretty good that some roads will still be closed and you might get snowed on!  Ditto for Teton National Park, although yes they are a couple of hours apart and doable in one trip.

In reply to another PP, Glacier NP is actually quite a ways away from Yellowstone so probably wouldn't be able to fit that in--plus Glacier is even further north and they have snow well into summer.

It is a gorgeous place to visit but I would definitely recommend for saving it for summer time!  If you want to go the National Park route, my DH and I drove through Arizona/Utah/Colorado through several national parks on our honeymoon and it was absolutely breathtaking.  Search for Arches NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands NP, etc.  They are all very close together.

  • Hawaii! We went to Kauai, it was lovely :)
