The Nest name change help?

ok so I just found this website by The Nest that is selling this name change help service for like $30 that is supposed to make the name change process really easy by helping you with all the forms or something.

what im wondering is if anyone had used it, and/or if you thought it was worth buying? is the process really that difficult? do I need to spend $30 to keep from going crazy trying to do it on my own?

please let me know what you think!

Re: The Nest name change help?

  • It might vary state to state, but where I live, the name changing process wasn't very difficult at all. It seems like a waste of $30 to me.

  • Changing your name is easy go to the social security office with your marriage certificate. And fill out a name change form you will get a new social security card in 2 to 3 weeks. Then go to the license bureau with the same information and get a new ID picture taken and printed with your new name cost $20. I did mine in all one day it is really easy don't waste your money on this.

  • Agree w/PPs. The hardest part for me has been little things like frequent traveler programs, where I forgot I even had them during the name change process but need to change my name as I use them. Most of these, and banks/credit cards have required faxed proof of your new name. The only way I can see this being worth it is if the service sends in the proof for you and you don't have access to a free or cheap fax machine (I once had to send a fax from a UPS store or something... it was like $2-3!!). Though really, as long as you change your name with all your loyalty cards and such before you need them, you could just use snail mail. So again, not worth it.

Also, PP mentioned the process is SS, then DMV, then everywhere else (banks, utilities, loyalty cards, magazines if you care, . True, but you shouldn't need to wait for your new SS card to go to the DMV - the SS office told me that they update their system overnight, and the DMV (in my state, anyway) verifies the name change with SS online. So I applied for a new SS card on Monday and got a new license Tuesday.

  • it does vary by state but overall it wasn't a hard process. I think the most time i took off from work was a morning to go to the SS office.  Our DMV had a late night.  I went to the DMV first and got a new temporary license and kept the old, til my new picture came in (In NY) then I went to social security and filled out the forms and brought my marriage license and old and new drivers license. Most credit cards I called didnt even need proof of change they just did it. My car loan and student loans I mailed a copy of the marriage license. Most of it is alot of phone calls and mailing.  The last thing i did was my passport which required me to mail in our actual marriage license and was the most expensive.

  • I'm pretty sure I know exactly what service you're talking about. I got a groupon for it so I only paid $15. Still not worth it. I went through and filled everything out, and I couldn't get it to print so it was a total waste for me. If you search around, there's websites with links to the forms for social security and passports. I would recommend doing it yourself without the service. It sounds intimidating, but it's really not too difficult at all.

If I could pay $30 for a service that a person would stand in line at the SS office, take care of faxing all the right documents to my frequent flyer programs, fax the documents to all my banks, scan the documents that friggin' Facebook needs (wtf, Facebook!), etc. I would pay it in a heartbeat.

Filling out a few forms is no big deal, and I can't imagine how they would be able to fill out the forms if you didn't fill in all the information anyway.  So I can't imagine what kind of service they're actually offering.
