When it comes to a landscaper's plans
is it rude or tacky to ask him to switch out some of the bushes he picked? My front garden gets mainly shade with hard afternoon sun. The guy who came to do the design and eventually instillation included Cleyera and Xanadu in his plans. The Cleyera is supposed to be the foundation in the back along the house. The Xanadu are along the front border mixed in with some gardenias. I'd post his pic but it says it's copyrighted, so not sure if that would be frowned upon. Any other bushes that would be a good suggestions instead of the Xanadu and Cleyera? I'm in zone 7/8 if that helps.
Re: When it comes to a landscaper's plans
Ditto all of this. Nest Cayla is wise. I don't think it's rude at all if you disagree with his plans - it's YOUR house! But I would definitely ask him about why those particular bushes were selected, and for suggestions for other options that would meet the same environmental and aesthetic criteria - It's possible they're just favorites of that particular landscaper or that he can get a good deal on them right now or something silly like that, you know?
Sugar & Spice
When I draw a design, I always list substitutions. MANY clients need to swap out plants, mostly because of local availability. I tend to suggest uncommon plants, sometimes they just can't be found close by for a reasonable price.
