Find a New Vet?
A few weeks ago I posted about my 7 year old beagle (female, spayed) possible having a UTI (this was my theory). I took her into the vet with a fresh urine sample and the vet said that the crystals in her urine were extremely high but that there was little blood present.
The vet treated my dog with some pain meds and some basic antibiotics. She treated my dog for a UTI specifically.
My dog seemed to get better during the 2 weeks she was on the meds. But now she is back to her old symptoms (peeing in the house, frequent urination, little coming out) and now she isn't eating and not really going #2 either.
I obviously need to take her back in to see the vet.
But I am concerned...I've been reading online and I wonder why my vet treated my dog for a UTI when perhaps the signs pointed to stones. What I've read suggests that a classic sign of UTI is blood (not necessarily visible to the naked eye, though) in the urine. And, the vet said she had only a "teeny, tiny" amount of blood.
This seems like an easy thing to diagnose. Am I right? Is my vet treating my dog for extra things? What should I do? TIA.

I feel like a lot of vets overtreat. My dog gets a lot of ear infections and my old vet used to give her antibiotics, shots of steroids, and shots of antibiotics every time - charging me $250 plus. I switched vets and my new vet gave me a tube of cream and said when her ear is bothering her put some in.
However, I think without doing a ton of testing treating for a UTI would be the first step your vet would take to see if the dog improves.
At then end of the day you have to do what is best for your dog. If you do not feel confident in your vet and the diagnosis he makes than I would say its time to search for a new vet.
Did your vet do a urinalysis to verify that it is a UTI?? The vet definitely should have started with that but being the symptoms are back I would suggest that you get blood work done to ensure there is no underlying condition...you may want to check this out (if you haven't already read it http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/urinary-tract-infections-dogs )
Also I would suggest you find another vet....not doing the proper tests could mean that the vet is not looking out for the best interest of the animal...
