Welcome Basket
We are hosting a foreign exchange student from Germany. She will be here in less than a month, and will be with us for one year. She's 17 years old. I'd like to have a welcome basket for her, in her room, once she arrives. Any suggestions as to what to have in there would be great! I know this question doesn't totally fit this forum, but it was my best option.

Awwww, sound like fun!
When I have family come and stay, I have a large basket that is always in the guest room. I usually fill it with their own toiletries, like a bar of soap (something that smells good), plus those tiny bottles of lotion, shampoo & conditioner that you get from hotels. I also have a set of towels and washcloths that don't match the others in the house that are just for THEM, so they feel like they always know what bathroom linens are theirs. Some people are weird about that.
I'd probably put in there some local specialties food-wise, things a teen would like, snacks with a local flavor, some local soda beverages, candies, chocolates, stuff like that. And a great map. Check out your local bookstore for books on the history of the area, inexpensive little things like that. Some magazines for reading. Maybe go to your own travel/tourist bureau and pick some stuff up that would be helpful. I know the internet is great, but I always prefer something in my hand. Also, if there are local internet sites that have local events, things she might be interested in, copy and paste them onto a document and print it for her so she knows where to look.
Once you get to know her, you might want to have a "welcome party" with your family and friends to meet her. Since she's going to be there a year, it would be helpful. Maybe put together a fun family tree, adding her in there under your name, so she knows who everyone is, LOL.
