grass in my garden

Hi everyone :)

In two of my gardening beds (a peony and some bulbs, and then blackberries) there is some grass growing in. What should I do? Thanks!

Re: grass in my garden

  • I would suggest weeding it out by hand and laying some weed fabric down along with some mulch!!

    Good luck!!

  • Yup, what mgugs said.

Also, do you have any kind of a barrier between lawn and garden, to prevent the grass from spreading into the garden?

  • I have a handmade wooden border around my garden that keeps most of the grass out, but I generally weed by hand.  The grass tends to hurt my bare hands, so I'd recommend wearing a pair of gardening gloves if you do that.

  • Thanks everyone! I had actually taken the weed fabric out of one of the garden plots but I probably should have just left it since that plot was originally a grassy area....thought I killed the grass but apparently not! With the blackberries I had read that you should not put down mulch but I am going to do fabric and mulch b/c I don't want that pesky grass. I have a cheap wire border down to keep the dogs out but I will invest in a sturdier one, probably wood as suggested, to keep out grass - esp since most of our grass is weeds and we were going to seed and feed and all that in the fall to try to get grass instead.

  • Want to kill weeds? Pour boiling water straight to the weeds; it will kill the unwanted plants. There are also many other ways to kill weeds, including using commercial chemicals specifically designed to kill grass weeds.

  • The simplest way of removing sod or unwanted grass from your lawn is by digging it out. For this, you need a sharp spade. Water the area well before digging, it will be done with less physical effort.
  • Pull it. Weed fabric does NOT prevent weeds. That is a myth created to market weed fabric. Weeds will grow right on top of it, and knotgrass or wiregrass will grow under it for several feet and emerge on the other side.
