We just now decided to go to Jamaica for our 1st anniversary this September. It is kind of last minute, I was hemming and hawing for a while but decided to do it. I legally changed my last name to my married name several months ago. My driver's license and passport still have my maiden name. I would have to expedite the passport (for approx. $180) AND take a 1/2 day at work to go to the DMV to get a new license because heaven forbid a government agency has hours that accommodate anyone (a long lunch break is not an option).
I called the airline and they said if I book the reservation under my maiden name I wouldn't have any issues... with the airline. I have recently flown with travel docs in my maiden name but it was in the US. Do you think I'd run into any problems with customs? Would they know my name has been legally changed? I'm irritated with the whole name changing process but also don't want to take any chances. I envision getting arrested and telling my story on Locked Up Abroad!
Any firsthand knowledge or personal experience with this? What would you do?
Re: Can I roll the dice?
Before I changed my passport I just booked the travel under the name on it, I never travel abroad with any other ID besides mmy passport
i have never had a problem
unfortunately i cant help in the experience department.
I imagine they wouldn't know that you changed your name as long as all your stuff still had your maiden name-DL, passport, airline tickets. It would still make me nervous though, especially since its out of the US.
Book the tickets with the name that matches the name on your IDs. You're over thinking this.
PS The name your parents put on your birth certificate is your name. Always will be your name. Any name changes are considered "aliases."
My passport still has my maiden name on it - it's been 2 years and any time we've traveled somewhere requiring passports, we just book my ticket with my maiden name. Have been out of the country 3 times so far and we're going to Armenia in September. Just make sure your flight ticket matches the name on your passport and you'll be fine.
Have fun in Jamaica
Because you haven't changed your DL -- your primary proof of identity -- your name hasn't been "legally" changed. It's not changed until you change it. Many many people get married and never change their name.
Book the tickets in your maiden name and you'll be fine.
Your name isn't changed until you switch it with the social security administration. That's what makes it official, not your drivers license.
