DAP products for anxiety in dogs?

Tenth Anniversary 5000 Comments 500 Love Its Name Dropper

I'm not a regular here, but our vet gave us a brochure for Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) products when DH took him last weekend, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with them.

We have a 20 lb smooth fox terrier with extreme anxiety.  We've done some training with him, and it has worked wonders, but he's still such a poor thing.  Thundershirt helps some, but not in really high anxiety situations (like, fireworks).  He's also on amytriptilan (spelling, I know, sorry), 10mg twice/day.

i love the idea of a pheromone as opposed to another/more medications, and we're still working with his training.  The reviews DH has found online of DAP collars and products seem mixed as far as their effectiveness, but none of them are out and out bad, kwim?  For $20 or $25, it seems worth a try if it could help my poor thing feel less stressed out all the time.

Re: DAP products for anxiety in dogs?

  • I don't have any experience with them but for $25 I'd give it a shot. I mean, the worst thing that could happen is it's total bunk and you're just out a little money. I grew up with an Australian Shepherd who was petrified of storms and fireworks. He would literally scratch the fur off of his butt until he was bald. My parents sometimes drugged him but never tried anything else...poor guy :(

  • I know many ladies who've had success in helping calm their anxious/nervous pups with DAP collars. Depending on the level of your dog's anxiety, a combination of some meds and the DAP collar may be needed, along with lots of patience and working with him through anxious situations.

I hope you find something to help him!

  • Thanks for the input, guys!

I think we're going to try the DAP collar, and then the vet called me today about trying a different medication that she had mentioned to DH, and after talking to her, we have a plan for right now.  We're going to get him a DAP collar and also try Composure herbal supplements and see how that goes.  If those two more natural remedies don't work out, we'll wean him off the medication he's on now and try this other one that she is recommending.

    Thanks again!
