Keeping veggie garden soil warm in winter?

We have just a few weeks left in our growing season, and I was wondering if there is something I can use to cover my dug up veggie garden with? I have not dug up the garden yet, but I probably will start to in September. I believe iam in growing zone 4 at an elevation of 8,500 ft above sea level.

  • Not sure I understand your question.  I don't think you don't need to cover the garden once all the annual plants have died off for the season. Maybe putting down some mulch can't hurt.  I live in Canada, so we get hard freezes in the winter. I just pull out all the dead annuals (veggies included) and put them in the compost, and then let nature take its course.  Replant in the spring!
  • October is a great time to plant winter veggies. But before that start turning the soil, remove perennial weeds. Consider growing plants in raised beds.
  • Want a high yielding veggie garden? Prepare a nutrient rich, well balanced soil by continually adding organic matter to it. You can do this with compost, green manures, crop rotation etc.

My family lives in the northern Midwest and they always used leaves (the fallen ones in Autumn, not green). Leaves are great because they keep the plants warm and will eventually break down into nutrient rich soil.

  • There is no necessity of providing cover to your garden. Take proper care of your garden by watering garden and from pests . So go and make your garden.
