What made your honeymoon special?

Re: What made your honeymoon special?

  •
I can relate to this--we actually spent two weeks at an AI in the Riviera Maya! It got boring after a while--it was too hot to play tennis, you can only have so much sex, and we weren't too impressed with the food. We ended up watching a lot of TV! Next time we go to Mexico, I want to stay at hotel with a dive shop attached, and we'll eat amazing food from hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

Can only have so much sex??  Jk :))
  • abloom6510 I love that! It's so cool when we create our own path in our marriage, even for our honeymoon, everyone does it differently. Rock on to yall!

SapphireCounselor I love London too. What made you love it? I lived in England for 7 years and going to London never got old. It's an amazing city.

  • Our honeymoon had all sorts of bumps in the road (rental car, unpluged apliances, me getting selected by the TSA, etc) and wasn't glamorous but it was fantastic! We woke up every morning in a lovely home, drove around exploring, went to the beach, played put put golf, I could go on and on.
  • @erollis oh no not the TSA:( I'm glad you still managed to have fun. We had our own little travel bumps as well. We actually ended up loosing our first purchased honeymoon (tiny refund back), and having to buy another one. Long story but it all ended well!!!!

Oh wow! How did you loose the first honeymoon? I'm curious.

Yea... Gotta love the TSA sometimes. I told the guy "this is a great way to start my honeymoon" and that took him by surprise a little. He did say sorry.

Good on him for saying sorry.

  • We went to Kauai, Hawaii for a week! It was amazing. It was special because we both had not been to that island. Also, we did a lot of activities, and relaxing too! Oh and some amazing dinners :)
  • My husband and I have been together for six years and the only vacation we have been on together was our honeymoon, so that made it special. It was an incredible trip, I wanted the real once in a lifetime honeymoon experience, but we weren't keen on going anywhere hot, so we went to the Ice Hotel in northern Sweden.

Everything was so beautiful and we had these fantastic experiences every day, riding snowmobiles and sledding with huskies/reindeer. We spent one night in a beautiful carved ice room sleeping in reindeer skins on an ice bed at -5C, and the rest of the time in cute, warm little chalets. We took photos under the northern lights and ate reindeer and moose, and we spent an evening in the ice bar drinking cocktails from glasses made of ice.

It was so unique and so us, and we felt so alone together and far away from everything. It was amazing.
  • TattieSoup that sounds so cool! (literally :)

How did you guys keep warm? I bet you guys have amazing pics. Would love to see the Northern Lights!

How did you guys keep warm?
    Lots of snuggles!

Seriously, it wasn't actually that difficult. It was a very dry cold, you didn't really feel it. I walked to the restaurant for breakfast in a t-shirt one morning and I felt fine even though it was about -11C. All guests get complimentary snowsuits and snow boots to wear during their stay and we did wear them when out and about but they were only strictly necessary for doing the activities.
For the one night on the ice bed in the cold accommodation, we slept on reindeer skins which are very good natural insulators, then we had a double sleeping bag designed for up to -15C, which kept us toasty warm since the hotel is actually heated to -5C. I ended up unzipping my side of the bag as I was too hot!

I like your photos from your hot/cold honeymoon!

  • We had a destination wedding in Jamaica which transitioned into a wonderful honeymoon.  What made it special was the couple massage and the excursions we chose (swimming with the dolphins, riding a camel and bobsledding)  We also go to do a sunset photo shoot.  (It rained on our wedding day so we didn't get those pictures on that day.)   The resort also treated us to private dinners and we participated in a Ideal Couple contest.  It was a great time.

My husband and I went to Jamaica and pretty much stayed at the resort relaxing but the best part about it was that we experienced so many new things together. We learned about a new culture and compared it to home, embraced new concepts and looked for way to expand our horizons...Together. Best trip Ever! Oh, and Delroy (our romantic dinner waiter) at Secrets St. James was great too! ;;)
  • My husband and I had a honeyversary this year. We celebrated our Third anniversary and honeymoon in Atlantic city this April. It was just amazing, the best time for us :)
  • We spent a few days in Puerto Rico before going on a Southern Caribbean cruise.  The whole vacation was awesome, and of course, spending time with my new husband was the best part, but I loved doing different things.  This was my 7th cruise and I have always just done the beach and snorkeling because I've always gone with my family.  We only did 1 beach day and 1 snorkeling day.  The others were rainforest tours, rum tours, island tours, etc.

  • We went to Canmore, AB. We rented a condo with a pool and hot tub so we were able to relax our aching muscles after a day of hiking/mountain biking or exploring the town. I think what made it special is that it was the first time in a looong time (almost 4 years) that we were able to be alone and not have anything requiring our time. I was also living in a different province at the time of the wedding so it was nice to spend time with him period.

We stretched our budget as far as it could go and we spaced out how much we would need for what during our honeymoon. One of the perks of getting married in November was that it's considered "Off-season" at many hotels etc. So the rates are cheaper. We dreamed of honeymooning in Catalina, and in doing so during off-season we saved a lot of money. It was also nice because since it wasn't beach weather we felt like we had the boat trip, and the island practically to ourselves. We picked the restaurants we wanted to eat at on the island when we got there and we grocery shopped for the other meals throughout the week stay. It was more of a local trip since we lived in Los Angeles at the time. My suggestion is finding a way to spread out the budget while enjoying each others company the most. We stayed on top of a mountain on the island (it wasn't a large mountain but enough of one that it was a work out to take the stairs up and down it!) so some nights we took the taxi but most of the nights and days we were there we just put our sneakers on and walked down it. It was a good bonding and exercising experience and we saved money that way too without compromising quality time together and fun. We only splurged when we wanted to do something really fun and we spread out those fun things (like going on a semi-submersible submarine tour, bike riding up to the Botanical Memorial Gardens, Photographing the Mermaid mosaic at the old time Casino) etc. But the rest of the time we spent in nature exploring and having quality time together. The room we stayed in didn't have a t.v. (it was very nature oriented) but there was a lot of history to it. It's called the Zane Grey Pueblo. The house belonged to an author who was famous in Hollywood in the 40's and 50's. The only entertainment in that pueblo/house was renting out the authors books for free at the front library/desk or sitting on the balcony at night overlooking the ocean--really romantic and makes you thankful for the beauty in nature as well. We took time out just for us and away from our phones/computers etc. (which we heavily relied on for wedding planning previous to the honeymoon) And it made us focus more on each other and the beauty around us and encouraged us to get clever and play with the resources available on the island. In other words....use what you have, where you are, and enjoy it. It was nice to have a beautiful view, but the key is to enjoy each other wherever you are no matter what. We all have an adventurer inside of us! It's fun to bring it out in one another. Have fun. Much love!
  • My husband and I were about to move Abroad so we didn't want to spent time or money going on a long trip.  We just spent a night on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin.  It was special because we got a nice Resort hotel room with a hot tub and wine in the room.  Just being newlyweds and reminiscing about the wedding is what made it special.  Everything was together as husband and wife :)  Dinner overlooking the lake, walking along the beach, relaxing in the hot tub together. Just fun to do after the stress and planning of the wedding.

After going through it, I would definitely tell anyone getting married to do SOMETHING with their new spouse right after the wedding, even if it's only a night or two away together.  It's such a special time and the longer you wait the more you forget that special newlywed feeling.
  • money was tight after the wedding but my brother who travels a lot offered to fly us anywhere (within reason) we wanted for our honeymoon.   After long debate and opinions coming from everyone we decided on New Orleans.  I am a huge history buff and he loves night life so we figured this would be perfect.  and it was, however we did very little with history and only went out after 10 one night.  We had an amazing time just enjoying each others company.  Every morning he woke up before me (I like my sleep!) and walked down to Cafe Beignet and brought us back Beignets for breakfast....  then we would just wonder around for the day.  It was amazing.  Our wedding was very much DIY and that week in New Orleans was perfect because it meant we got to relax and do nothing for a week before getting back to the real world.
Being newlyweds hit home for me while we were laid over in Alabama for an hour and  DH had just walked off to get something and a lady tried to sit next to me and without missing a beat I said "I'm sorry but my husband is sitting there"  It took me a minute to realize what I had just said and them I could not stop smiling,  DH came back saw my smile and asked about it.  I told him what had just happened and it made our day!
  • We went to Beverly Hills/Hollywood/Anaheim. We had such a great time. Went to a Lakers game, The Getty, Walt Disney Concert Hall, a fun Hollywood tour and then Disneyland. What made it special was being married. We loved just being on a vacation together and being stress free. We also ate a lot of really nice and special meals since we are both huge foodies.
  • We did Universal Orlando/Islands of Adventure and Epcot, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios across 6 days. We're huge nerds so Islands of Adventure was our favorite; we probably spent a total of 8 hours in Harry Potter alone. We also did Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. Epcot was having their Food & Wine Festival so we spent 9 hours there eating and drinking. We were drunk off margaritas from *Mexico* watching the fireworks at World Showcase. lol It was not a relaxing honeymoon, but it was ours and that's what made it special. It fit us perfectly.
  • We were able to include a 4 day Caribbean cruise in our wedding budget. Neither of us had been on a real vacation since we were kids. We also didn't live together before we were married. So, just being together on a fun adventure was amazing for us.
  • Getting free ice cream!

Seriously though, I loved the little town that we stayed in. The fall foliage was perfect at that time. Our hotel was nice. There were small shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Each of us got to do something that we really wanted to. As I happily mentioned in the first line, I got to go to the Ben and Jerry's factory, which was everything I imagined. And DH, being the retro-esque guy he is, got to go to get a straight shave at a local barber.

I would not change a thing.

  • Just getting to wake up together made my honeymoon special. Hubby & I work different weekends so we never get a whole day together unless one of us takes the day off, which never happens lol. We went to the big island of Hawaii so we went on lots of adventures and tried a whole bunch of cool things. The day after we got back to nj (where im from), we went into nyc with my dad & met my mom & sister for dinner. It was a lot of fun because we live in texas currently and my husband is from Michigan and has never seen the city :)
  • My husband and I are both military and we were stationed apart when we got married (he was overseas and I was in the states).  Our honeymoon was just a few days together so we rented a hotel in the city, they upgraded us (hey, we're on our honeymoon and both military works!) to a beautiful corner suite on the 14th deck.  We walked around the neighborhood we were in, going to different restaurants, splurging each other, and of course enjoying being married. :)
  • My husband and I got married about two weeks ago. We are both 20! We went to Italy for our honeymoon! I love Ancient Roman history, so I was very excited. What made it so special is that we both agreed by the end that America was better in every single aspect, even FOOD. We HATED Italy. Smoking in Amsterdam and exploring Heathrow London Airport during both layovers was the most fun we had the entire time! We look forward to visiting London in the future and taking a million Harry Potter tours.
