Racial Profiling

This video speaks volumes on the dangers of profiling.  We really need to be focused on suspicious behavior, not a person's skin color or gender.http://www.upworthy.com/know-anyone-that-thinks-racial-profiling-is-exaggerated-watch-this-and-tell-me-when-your-jaw-drops-2

Re: Racial Profiling

  • Pretty interesting video.

I agree that this is a problem.

One question though, crime stats often reveal certain crime committal trends based on race, gender, and age.

So if a cop knows that many drunk drivers on a Friday night will be white, male 16-22 year olds, shouldn't he profile when he decides to pull people over?

Basically, if the stats/facts reveal convincing evidence about a likely perpetrator's gender, age and appearance, shouldn't LE utilize those stats to protect the places they serve?

The TSA does this in reverse too. Now elderly travelers are permitted to keep their light sweaters and jackets on when going through security check points. So based on stats and profiling the TSA has determined that an elderly traveler is not suspect to be a terrorist. This is profiling.

I think profiling has a place in LE. It cannot be the end-all, but it seems that if it is based on proper collected crime stats that it makes sense to help a LEO make a more educated, sound decision when they pull someone over, make an arrest or whatever.

I think it's really easy for you, as a white woman, to say this.

I think that you may be correct. And, I do comment on this thread keeping this point in mind.

If stats exist (and I know they do) to point to likely culprits in a crime based on age, gender and/or race, then should the stats be used to form a basis for LE's actions? Or, should stats, as helpful as they may be, be ignored?

Absolutely not!  Speaking as an officer, you are supposed to pull people over when you observe them breaking the law not because they fit the profile.
