Moving soon.... with kitty

Has anyone ever moved across the country with a cat?  We're moving from Chicago to Dallas in about a month, and I've been trying to figure out what the best thing will be to do with my cat.  She gets pretty panicky for the whole mile drive (yes, literally one mile) it is to the vet's office, so I'm not sure what to do with her for the ~1300 miles trip coming up, plus we're staying a night with my parents - who have dogs which will also be stressful for her.

So, for one thing she cannot use the calming spray products.  We used to have one that worked great and we could use it and she would just totally chill, but one night she completely flipped and tried (well, and succeeded) in attacking me.  We tried it one more time to make sure it was the spray, and it was, so we don't touch stuff with pheremones anymore.

Has anyone used either the Thunderjacket, or what has been your experience with kitty Prozac?  I don't particularly want to take a pricey trip to the vet just to get meds, but it might be the best solution.  Has anyone used anything that's ingested (besides anxiety meds) to calm down their pet?

Re: Moving soon.... with kitty

  • Here's what a friend who JUST moved from OK to AZ with her kitties has to say:

"No food 12 hours before travel. I gave my cats Dramamine: 1/2 regular strength pill about 30 minutes before travel. The only way I could give it to them was dissolved in water in a medicine dropper. (I hid it in treats, but they found it and laughed at me.) The cat (and human) will hate life for a while; the taste makes them panic and drool. But my boys were mostly quiet both days with no accidents. They rode in their carriers the entire way and only fussed with altitude changes. There may be better ways, but it worked for me. We were in the car 10 hours the first day and 8 the second (this includes stops)."

I would definitely test any meds on your kitty before you travel to make sure she doesn't have a bad reaction. The last thing you want is to be on the road stuck with a veterinary emergency and not know where to go!

  • Ours are pretty bad with short trips, too. They meow continuously on the way to the vet. However, for longer trips...this is what I did - I used a larger dog crate, for both of the cats to ride in. Lots of blankets and their usually comfy bed. They quieted down after about 15 minutes, and hardly made a peep the rest of the trip. We were only going about 4 hours, but we also had our dogs in the car, as well. It went amazingly well. Good luck!

  • We are also planning on a move, Utah to Tennessee with 2 cats and 2 dogs. Our vet mentioned that they have a feline tranquilizer pill he can give us. I just have to tell them the weight of the animal and they dispense it based on that. I think I will do what a previous responder said as well and use the idea of putting both cats in one bigger crate so that they are together and see how well that goes. Good luck to you on your move.

One of my cats is on Prozac, but I think it's too late to start that. It took at least a month if not 6 weeks to work on her.

My mom moved from KY to MD with her cat. They did not feed her in the morning before travel, and got her a large carrier to ride in. She stopped every few hours for a potty break (the carrier was not big enough for a litter box in it, so she used puppy pads just in case).  She did spray with Feliwy but I know you said that isn't an option for you.

I'd call your vet and see what they suggest.
