My dog is losing his hearing.:(

He is 11 years of age.

First tipped off his hearing was going: he doesn't get nervous when there is a thunderstorm, he doesn't care anymore when firecrackers go off and he doesn't come to the door anymore when I come home.:(

He is fine at "close range.  If he is 15 or more feet away, he doesn't hear me.

  • Our family dog, who has passed (he was 17 when he passed) lost most of his hearing as well.  It can be hard to see your pet changing, for sure.  For us though, and him, it was a little bit of a blessing.  He was, like your dog, scared of thunder and fireworks.  It was pretty debilitating for him, especially the thunder.  When his hearing went, he never got nervous like that again, so that was the silver lining.

He stopped running to the door too, but that didn't mean he wasn't excited when we got home.  I would just come in and find him (he would usually snooze near the window in the living room, and wave at him, and he would get up and do his excited tail wagging and give me hugs (I had to kneel down for the hugs because he couldn't jump up anymore, but that was okay).

During the last few years of his life, he lost a lot of his "puppyness", but we also got awesome cuddles from him that we didn't get when he was younger, and he was happier too I think.

I know it's hard, and it is heart wrenching to see these changes in your best friend, but keep enjoying your pup, there is still awesomeness in the senior years :)

My beloved cattle dog started losing her hearing when she was 13 or so, and when we put her down at 15 she was pretty much deaf.  I would just talk right into her ear and tell her I loved her. I agree that the senior years can be a lot different than a dogs younger years - but you also get a lot out of them.  Senior dogs just want to love you and be loved with lots of cuddles.  Its never easy when dogs age :(
