Hi everyone. I need some major decorating help. My walls are a light beige color as is my carpeting. My base and crown molding are white. I'm stuck on browns and neutrals but I'd really like to add a pop of color to my home. I like the way model homes look and would like to achieve a similar look without breaking the budget. Any recommendations and links to any specific items would really be appreciative. I'll post pics of my bedroom, entryway, and living room in separate threads so I can get feedback from each. Thanks for your help.
Re: Help Me Decorate!
Welcome
I've answered both your posts, but a couple general notes:
- Shop TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, and Target for brightly colored, on-trend, inexpensive decor. Also check antique shops, flea markets, and Goodwill/thrift - you never know what original items you might find.
- Scale is the most important thing for beginners. Beginners always buy little things because they're inexpensive and readily available and they just don't know better. The model homes you like probably have a few large accessories rather than lots of little things. This goes for everything - chandeliers, rugs (always bigger! an 8x10 is almost never the right size! especially in modern, larger, new construction homes), decorative objects, and art.
- Rugs and curtains are very hard to get right - they take lots of trial and error but when you get them right, they completely change a room. Don't be discouraged when it feels like you're striking out with these items. Just keep your receipts and only buy places that take returns! We just moved into a new house 4 days ago and I've already been to TJ and Target what feels like a dozen times trying out different items.
- When you find a room you just love, study it. Break it down. What do you love? I don't have an ounce of creativity in my body, but I'm a very analytical person. For me in the beginning, I'd look at a room and say, "Ok, blue walls + white sofa + pink pillows + seagrass rug. I can make those pieces a reality in my home." When you study decor, you realize it doesn't have to be this "oh, I've just got a natural flair" - that's true for many people, but you can have a beautiful home and not have a natural flair.
