So I am no longer pregnant- which is awesome! I already typed up my little birth story for my month board (who cares about every detail) so forgive it for being long. If you don't feel like reading it (which I totally understand) the basics are: It went quickly, there was no time for ANY meds, I was 15 mins away from having a baby in the car, it's a girl!
With Lillian I was in labor for 14 hours and pushed for 2 ? hours. I know they always say the second one is faster and different, but I wasn?t expecting it to be THIS different!
Sunday night I had contractions all night, never consistent, never too strong. They stopped around 6am on Monday.
Monday night around 7 the contractions started again. I was immediately discouraged and told my husband I couldn?t do another night of this crap knowing that they would just stop and not get anywhere. I had contractions from 7-9 somewhat regularly, but 10 minutes, 15 minutes, nothing really exciting. Around 9 they started getting stronger, but not more regular. My husband was going to bed around 10 and I told him that if I was too loud to tell me to go in the basement. He assured me he would not quarantine me to the basement!
Well, by 10:15 the contractions had gotten really strong and he came down to tell me that every time I had one I was waking Lillian up, so we moved into the basement. The contractions got very strong but at this point they were 8 mins, 5 mins, 7 mins, 10 mins, and just not showing much of a pattern. I labored until 11 when I had had enough! They were still very inconsistent, anywhere from 3-9 minutes, but I decided to call and lie to the doctor.
The Dr. called me back around 11:20 at which point I had to put the phone down and have a terrible contraction. She admitted later she didn?t really hear me screaming, because her response was ?If you?re uncomfortable you can come in.? I lied and told her I had 5/1/1, although I didn?t
By the time my friend arrived to stay with Lillian I was having contractions about a minute or two apart, but then nothing for a few minutes. The whole time I kept thinking if I got to the hospital and this was false labor I was going to die! The contractions seemed so much stronger than they had the first time around, but I was paranoid about crying wolf.
My friend took one look at me (she has 2 kids and had super quick labors) and told my husband to get himself in the car and drive fast. Contracting in the car was awful, but I didn?t have too many- just really strong ones when they happened.
When we got to the hospital we went to the ER door- which is under construction. I was literally pounding down the door and they finally let me in. I ran to the elevator in the ER and collapsed on the floor because another contraction was happening, as it was happening I was clawing at the wall to push the elevator button while my husband got a wheelchair. They asked me my name and I told them I didn?t know my name! The ER people called the birth center people to come down and get me, and along with my husband they somehow got me off the floor into a wheelchair and ran me upstairs.
As we arrived at L&D they yelled ?call the dr. tell her the patient is very active,? and I said, ?And tell her the patient needs drugs RIGHT NOW!? They gave me a look and I assured them that I wanted pills, IVs, Epidurals, and anything else they had, RIGHT NOW. I got into my room at 11:58. As soon as they checked me they got really quiet and started whispering about how the Dr. might not make it. I was told not to push, but I couldn?t help it and I pushed out my bag of water- I didn?t even know that was possible.
I got NO pain meds, no IV, nothing. There was one nurse who kept telling me I could do this, and I kept assuring her that I could not. She was having me breathe like they do in the movies- it was funny. At one point Nolan told me to do hee hee hoo and I told him ?Theres none of that hee hee bullshit!?
The Dr. walked in and 2 minutes later out popped my darling Caroline at 12:13 am. I might have pushed for 30 seconds, but I don?t think I even thought about pushing. The worst part was her sewing me up afterwards with no pain medication- she could do local needles, but that hurt!
I never planned on a med-free birth, but honestly I felt so good afterwards. I walked myself to my room (we switch after delivery) and felt fine. I really haven?t taken many pain meds and I?m surprised by that because after Lillian it was rough.
Caroline is doing well. We got discharged on Wednesday, although we were able to stay until Thursday. She has some jaundice due to our blood types so we have a special electric blanket that we have to keep her wrapped in.
Lillian is IN LOVE. She ran into the hospital yelling ?MY BABY!!!!!!!!!!? and hasn?t stopped yet. She gets upset when anyone else holds her. She is also doing well with me breastfeeding. She shows Caroline how to open her mouth for my ?Booms.?
Not the birth I expected, but beautiful none-the-less!
Re: It's a girl!
What a cool story!!! I am dying at how protective Lillian is over her little sister. What a little sweetheart! And I just love the name Caroline. It fits perfectly with Lillian.
Congrats Steph!!
I am lol @ "I don't know my name!"
But congrats, I love the name Caroline.
Congratulations!! Caroline is adorable. :-)
What an amazing story. I LOLed a couple parts especially the being banished to the basement & you and DH with the breathing.
