"Meaty" appetizers?

I am hosting a dinner party soon.

Main dish: homemade ravioli with butternut squash filling, brown butter sauce

Salad: Spinach with strawberries, chopped walnuts, vinegarette

Appetizer:  I am going to make bruschetta with mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes, and want to make one more appetizer too...?

Most of my friends are meat eaters, and I'm worried I won't be providing enough protein in this meal.  Any ideas on appetizers that could be a little bit "meaty" to satisfy their palate? Or any ideas on how to alter the main dish or side dish at all to add protein? TIA.

  • i make fresh ravioli at home too and do a brown butter sage sauce with it. it's great but it's heavy. i suggest that you serve one or 2 ravioli as a primi (first) and then do a protein and veg for the second (secondi). neither are large courses but together they make a great meal. that's more of the real italian way of doing it. maybe (since butternut squash iwth brown butter is really fall) a roast chicken or roast turkey breast. neither are heavy but very delicious.

  • Bacon wrapped scallops tend to be popular.
  • Bacon wrapped anything!

A friend of ours does bacon wrapped dates stuffed with cheese. I think she uses blue cheese. They're so good!
