Design help with living room

We live in a small 1950's rancher, which is our first house. I want to be finished with the living room, but I feel like there is something missing to pull the room together.

A few things to note:
-The room is awkwardly long and functions as living room/foyer, front door is to the right of the end table
-The house was built before people had TV's in their living room. I've always hated the layout with the TV (there is a door right next to it going to the guest bedroom) but we've tried other layouts and this seems to work the best
-I don't want to change the furniture, rugs, and wall color due to time/money
-We may one day put in crown molding and recessed lighting

Some ideas/questions I have are:
- I'm thinking of changing the window treatments. Maybe something with a pattern but what colors/type of pattern? I've seen a lot of photos where the curtains go almost to the ground; how would that look in this room with these short windows and couches in the way?
- Maybe different pillows, again what kinds of colors and patterns? We can also change the fabric on the piano bench easily, I think the current is too matchy-matchy with the rug, but again what kind of pattern would go with everything else?
- Should there be something on the wall, above, below next to the TV? There is a pretty big space in that corner between the trunk and the couch and we used to have a big plant there but it died and we just don't know if we should do something else there and if so, what.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions! I am open to any input, just not too drastic or costly :)

Re: Design help with living room

  • I think longer curtains would look better-- especially on the wall with the loveseat.Something in blue and green to tie the wall color with the rug. I think you need to recover your throw pillows so they are also in the blue/green family.

I would: get a corner entertainment stand, put the TV on that, and move the love seat to the middle of the room so it would still be making an L shape with the couch. Then I'd put a sofa table/book shelf/ something under that window where the loveseat currently is.

  • Hi Rachel,

I am thinking that in order to make your living room come together as a whole it would be helpful to have a focal point in the room which draws the eye in. Have you ever thought about adding a fireplace?  I'm not sure where you are located or what climate you live in, but fireplaces really make an impact on the design of the room.  Not to mention the add a little coziness to the space.  Depending on the style of the room, you could choose a wood mantel or a more modern stone mantel.  Check out the fireplaces on this site: http://www.heatilator.com

Other than that, I would suggest an oversized painting or piece of wall art to become the main attraction of the room.  You can do a lot with this and add a very personal touch to the room.  Finally, try adding some stylish, patterned throw pillows or some patterned curtains to the room to uplift the vibe and style.

    Hopefully, this helped!
  • Hi, Rachel

In looking at your photos, I would suggest changing out both your window treatment and have them go to the floor.  I would also hang the rod higher up closer to the ceiling to make the room look higher.  From the picture it looks like you have a low ceiling.

In terms of pattern for the window treatment I would go with something that has a small geometric pattern.  You can use your window treatment fabric to bring the whole room together.  Looking at  your space now, it lacks an element that connects all the colors together in your space.

I would also add some white elements in your space, maybe paint your leaning bookcase white to coordinate with your white trims.
