Making a living in a spa

I'm  a massage therapist looking for a little advice from other spa employees.

i went to massage school when I was 21. I was in school for two years and have been licensed for 5. I have finally found a spa that keeps me pretty busy, just on the weekends, and I'm happy. Right now I'm home with my son and I work Saturday and Sunday so it's a pretty good gig.

my crisis is should I make spa work my ft job when LO goes to school or should I also return to school? I absolutely LOVE massage, I really have a wonderful job, but is this a realistic ft living? I wouldn't mind returning to school for healthcare but that comes with its own commitments and debt. I feel like I have been struggling with what to do ever since I left school and its so frustrating!

is anyone out there making a real career out of spa work? I'm sorry if this is a mess, thanks for reading

  • I would figure out if you can live on being a massage therapist full time.  If the answer is yes, and you enjoy doing it.  Well there you go :)

  • I have done nails for 9 years and started working as a massage therapist this year. Right now I do both, 13 hours a week doing nails and 18 doing massage. Sometimes I pick up extra hours when needed by my employers but I make a pretty comfortable living even if I don't take the extra hours. When I did nails only I typically only worked 30-35 hours a week and got by fine on that income. I make more doing massage but I like my nail clients and want to keep working with them.
