Moscow?

I'm traveling to Armenia in September with my H and we have a 10 hour layover in Moscow. Does anyone here know anything about going to Moscow for a short period of time like this in terms of visas? I understand you need one to visit anywhere in Russia but I'm having trouble finding out the cost....

I assume you're in the US? You can find the visa fees on the embassy website:

     http://www.russianembassy.org/page/visa-processing-fees

The length of time doesn't really make much difference unless you're staying for months. A day or even a few hours are pretty much the same as two weeks. The only exception is if you take the ferry from Finland, in which case you can overnight without an advance visa, or if you do a day tour with an authorized tour guide who obtains a group visa for everyone in the group.

  • Not sure where you are, but just in case, here's the info from the Consulate General in NY: http://ruscon.org/visa_dep_ENG.html

    Good luck!

  • Thanks, ladies!

I just wanted to find out the cost of tourist visa only because my FIL, as usual, caused a state of unecessary panic regarding getting a visa to visit Moscow along with the cost. Mind you, he is not even going with us to Moscow - we are meeting him in our final destination. He was yelling (yes, yelling) at us that it cost $250 and that we should just stay in the airport for the 10 hour layover and 'not waste $250' on a visa. We also have another 10 hour layover on our return to US - the last thing we really want to do is sit around in the airport for 10 hours. Mind you, this is the only chance we will probably have to visit Moscow so we wanted to take advantage and according to the links you have all posted, the actual cost is $150. (in case you haven't gathered by now, my FIL is a bit ridiculous with his antics, but that's a whole other subject matter lol).

My H & I travel quite a bit, so any opportunity we get to visit a new city, we try to take advantage of, even if it's only for a few hours to have lunch or dinner. We did this on our last trip - got to see Duseldorf on our way to Barcelona and it was a perfect way to kill 8 hours for our connecting flight :)

  • I hope you get to go. I really enjoyed the city.

  • FYI: airport car service is a rip-off, and traffic is a nightmare... You may want to consider the "Aeroexpress" train that runs every 30 min and gets you close to city center in35: http://www.aeroexpress.ru/en/pda/schedule/sheremetyevo/moscow.html

You've been there? How much did you pay for your visa? And how long did it take for you to get it? We are going to be there the 2nd week of September....

(we are from NY too, btw)

  • Hi. I went in 1989 for my high school trip when it was still communist. I'm sure a lot has changed as far as visas.
