living room curtains help
My hubby & I just moved and we are looking for new curtains. We don't want to spend a lot of money, as we are on a budget w/ just moving. The windows are bigger so the standard curtains we find are too small for the windows.
Do living room curtains have to close completely or is ok to have them part way open (like buying smaller ones and pulling them "closed" all the way w/ open part in the center..? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Re: living room curtains help
Unless privacy is an issue, having "dummy" panels flanking each side of a window is perfectly acceptable and something routinely done by designers - and is a great way to save money.
If you are concerned about privacy, you might consider adding an inexpensive shade that you can lower when needed. You have many options: mount a shade inside your window frame and keep it fully retracted during the day (so it is not noticed), or you can go with a natural woven shade (usually made from grasses, reeds or bamboo) which would be mounted on your wall at the same height as the drapery rod, creating a rich layered look.
And while you are at it, be sure to mount your rod as close to the ceiling or crown molding as you can. Having your drapery panels reach from ceiling to floor creates the illusion of height and really opens up a room. Good luck!
I agree with PP, and if you are looking for inexpensive curtains, IKEA is a great source. Again, if you are not worried about privacy, their VIVAN curtains are only $9.99 for a pair ( yes! a pair, not a panel!) and are 98 inches long. They also come with hemming tape, so you can easily tailor them to fit your needs.

Target also has some good options. Or, you could buy fabric at a fabric store like JoAnn Fabrics and "make" the draperies yourself.
I do not have sewing skills with a machine, but I have found that a heavy duty glue gun does the trick to hem and/or shorten fabric for window treatment projects.
As long as you properly measure and keep lines straight you cannot tell at all that glue instead of thread was used. I actually just did this in our baby's nursery and in our family room.
I would just add an extra panel or two, for privacy. During the day, you could tie them like this:
