How much do you spend on groceries?

Its just my husband and I. I feel like we spend A LOT on groceries ($150/week and I shop a WinCo). We only eat out once a week, usually a date night on Friday. We are both healthy and in pretty good shape, work out and run almost daily. I honestly dont think we over eat or really splurge, although we stay away from highly processed foods.  Sometimes I feel we waste a little too much. Before we lived together I only spent $100 a month on myself. Is $150 a week for groceries normal for two people??? And if anyone knows of any grocery budget guides blogs for two, please share. We both work, so meal planning is really difficult but I'm gonna try my best :(

Sorry if someone already asked this, I'm not on here frequently enough.

Re: How much do you spend on groceries?

  • I think from seeing people ask this question that alot of the cost depends on where you live and then on what you are buying.

We live in NY (an hour north of NYC) We spend about $150-$160 every two weeks for my DH&I.  I don't buy a ton of fresh fruits and veggies as I don't really eat any veggies or fruit, so I ask my husband what he wants from what is on sale. I always keep frozen veggies on hand at home for him.  So that def keeps our bill down. Do you buy alot of organic foods?  I keep a handful of snacks at home for us to bring in with our lunches during the week and i might keep a few quick frozen things on hand if we need something in a pinch.

Meal planning can help if you can figure out a way to work it into your schedule. I find that i only buy the ingredients i need for these meals and it helps me stick to my list.  Then during the week i have everything i need and i don't need to pick up extras. This also helps on deciding what to make for dinner. I make a list of meals for two weeks and i typically don't assign a day until the night before, this way i can juggle the meals around if something comes up in our week.

  • It's just two of us as well, and I typically spend between $75-90 per week at the grocery store. Every few months we shop and Sam's Club and spend between $200-300 there.

My best advice is to try to meal plan and base it off of your store's ad for the week. It helps me waste less food this way and spend less.

  • Nope no organic.

I guess my husbands just an eater, I've been keeping a eye on him since I went grocery shopping yesterday. Since I went grocery shopping yesterday he's already eaten one huge box of blue berries, half a huge watermelon, four strawberry short cakes (so four angle food cakes, a whole thing of strawberries and a whole thing of cool whip), two of MY luna bars, plus what I had planned for dinner yesterday and breakfast and lunch today... Not to mention he had a second breakfast at Winchell's. Lol.

  • We spend anywhere from 60 to 100 dollars a week, depending on if we need to stock up on things or not.  Meal planning really is key, and actually makes life easier when you both work.  Hubby and I are both gone during the day for work/school, and it helps that I don't have an extra errand to run to get supplies for dinner.

  • DH and I spend about $500 per month on groceries, toiletries, and other household goods. It's just the two of us and my cat.

Eating healthy is just plain expensive. :(

  • We spend $60-$75 a week on just the two of us.

For breakfast, H likes things he can grab and go, like bagels or muffins. I have cereal during the week and will usually make eggs for us on the weekends. For lunch H will take leftovers and I'll have soup, salads or sandwiches. And for dinner we usually have a meat/starch/veggie, although I try to sneak a meatless meal in there at least once a week.

I try to keep processed and junk foods to a minimum and make what I can from scratch. That's been a big savings, especially with H's breakfasts. I can make 2 dozen muffins for less than 6 pre-made muffins, and I know what's going in them! I also try to keep staples and quick meals on hand for nights when things come up or I don't really feel like cooking.
