Meeting with a Realtor for the 1st Time

Hi everyone! I post some on other boards and maybe once before here. We're slowly starting to look at houses (really, starting to think about looking at houses). We've always wanted to purchase just one house - the one we intend to stay in - but are open to the idea of a shorter term purchase if things worked out. We've got a bunch of "unknowns" in our lives right now so its difficult for us to 100% know what we're looking for!

Anyway, we're meeting with a realtor for the first time this week and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for things we might ask or want to know before we go. He's been highly recommend by two friends and said he usually starts out just trying to get to know folks better so he knows what to look for. Any thoughts or advice from you ladies would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Meeting with a Realtor for the 1st Time

  • Find out how many homes he has sold in the past 6 months and 12 months. If it's just handful, like less than 5, you should probably find someone else who is more active. The level of activity lets you know how successful they are at closing deals and probably negotiating. Plus, a more active agent has a better network.

The general rule is to not buy a home unless you plan on staying in it at least 10 years.

And you need to know your budget (what you can AFFORD based on your income and expenses), otherwise how will this guy, or any REA know what homes to show you?
