Exterior Shutters -- take 'em or leave 'em? (PIP)

I am NOT a fan of the shutters that come with the house and I want to take them off as soon as we settle... H, on the otherhand, thinks the house will look strange without them.

Within a year we will be repainting the exterior of the house and repairing/replacing some of the old wood siding, at that time I plan to buy different wood shutters (these are plastic) that coordinate with the new paint.

So, WDYT? Just leave them until we re-paint? Or take them off ASAP?

Re: Exterior Shutters -- take 'em or leave 'em? (PIP)

  • I agree with your H. It might look a little weird without them. I would leave them till you are ready to paint or redo the outside of the house.
  • I would leave them, if for no other reason than the paint underneath is likely to be a different shade and that'll look much worse than you think the shutters do now.

And, my, the homeowner was thorough with her aesthetic.

  • I would leave them -- but as you said you are planning to repaint the house... So you should absolutely paint the shutters another color as well! You can make this house look totally different if you pick out some great colors (one color for the house, and another for the shutters)

Have fun with it! :-) Once you get started on picking out colors, I'm sure you'll enjoy the project!

  • I would just leave them on until you are ready to tackle the outside of the house.  Although they aren't your taste, they aren't terrible.  And besides, the siding underneath the shutters may look crappy.  There could be a variation in color compared to the rest of the siding.

  • I kind of like the shutters. This house would look great in blue, with white shutters and trim!
