Cooking For Two Different Dietary Needs?

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting here. Woot!

Anyway, I'm hoping someone could give me some advice.  My husband and I have two completely opposite dietary needs.  He had a heart attack almost a year ago at the age of only 42.  Since then, he has gone on a strict low-fat, low-calorie practically vegan diet.  I love cooking for him and I have to say I am SOOO proud of him for making lifestyle changes to improve his health.  He has lost over 30 pounds and is off almost all of his heart meds.

But on the other hand, I have a different diet needs.  I tend to be thin anyway with a tendency to lose weight very easily (for example, I lost all my pregnancy weight in less than six weeks without dieting or exercise).  I'm still breastfeeding my 18 month old son, and over the course of the year I have become 25 pounds underweight.

Does anyone have any tips for cooking for two different dietary needs?  I prioritize my husband's health because I see his health as being at greater risk than my own, but I'm reaching a point of getting very unhealthy myself.  I just don't know if I can manage preparing three fat-free meals a day for my husband (I pack his lunch), healthy-but-toddler-friendly meals for my son, and high calorie meals for me.

How do I balance all of our different needs?

Re: Cooking For Two Different Dietary Needs?

  • Have you tried eating more meals? Having the 3 meals you're making for your H, but adding extra meals/snacks so that you're eating more calories but still eating healthy? Adding a fruit smoothie in the morning or a peanut butter sandwich in the afternoon, or a handful of trail mix with fruits and dried nuts.

this is good advice. Also try to get your h to help you more ( packing lunches and making meals is a lot of work esp with the different dietary needs).  Good luck!

  • Thank you both.  I think you are right... I need to eat more during the day between meals.

I guess this didn't occur to me because I've never been a snacker.  Growing up, we never had junk food in the house.  So I've only snacked on fruit.  It's a great habit, but not when you are underweight!
