kerosene smell w/gas appliances after staining

I don't ever post on the nest, but we've been dealing with an issue in our condo for 4 weeks & we've had it! We live on the 1st floor of a 3 floor condo building (24 units).

On July 3rd, someone on the 2nd floor re-stained their floors. The smell made its way down to the 1st floor hallway & started seeping into our unit. I called the mgmt company right away & all they told me to do was open our windows (uh, duh). On the 5th, my husband was cleaning, doing laundry, etc & had a candle going. When I came home I said it smelled like gas in our apt. He said he didn't smell it, but blew out the candle anyway. Later that night when we were cooking dinner I smelled a strong kerosene like smell. We called the gas company & when they came out they said it was from the staining fumes. The particles are in the air and when a flame hits them, it will create that smell. They told us it would go away in about a week. When we went to bed that night, our freshly washed sheets smelled burnt. We checked the rest of the clothes & they smelled too. The gas company came out on the 6th & checked everything again & they also were called by other units in our bldg that day too.

Well, the smell has persisted for the last 4 weeks. We can't cook on our stove, light candles, or dry laundry. We've been air-drying everything, so we can only do 1 load/day. The mgmt company is doing nothing about this & keeps telling us to use ineffective home remedies. We've used active dry charcoal, windows open, industrial fans going, baking soda, running the exhaust vents, trying to burn off the fumes, etc. Nothing works. We were just starting to notice some relief and then a new owner in the building decided to stain their floors yesterday & everything is back to square one. The building isn't being ventilated, which makes everything worse. We are not the only ones experiencing the issue, but no one in the building is really being vocal except for us & our landlord.

Has anyone else gone through this? What did you do to make the smell go away? We are so incredibly frustrated & cannot live our lives like this!

Thank you for any help you can give!
